Queen Camilla Ditches Her Shoes for a Beach Cleanup With King Charles in the Caribbean

Queen Camilla surprised royal watchers with a relaxed appearance during a beach visit in Antigua and Barbuda, taking off her shoes and going barefoot as she joined King Charles in a community cleanup.

The royal couple visited Fort James Beach in St John’s on November 3, 2026, as part of their Caribbean tour for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Dressed for the tropical weather, Camilla walked across the sand without her shoes while carrying a parasol to protect herself from the sun. She joined her husband and local volunteers in collecting discarded plastic and other rubbish along the coastline.

The King and Queen used litter pickers to gather waste as they learned about local efforts to protect the island’s beaches and marine environment.

Charles was reportedly surprised to hear that volunteers had already collected 71 bags of rubbish in just two hours that morning. Camilla praised the people involved in conservation projects, telling them: “Thank goodness for all of you.”

The Queen was also presented with a bright blue bracelet made from discarded kite-surfing materials. Admiring the gift, she remarked that it matched her dress.

The visit included several lighthearted moments. After Camilla had finished collecting rubbish, an aide reportedly joked that she had left nothing for the King to pick up.

The couple also watched a beach volleyball game and posed for photographs with young people from a local swimming school.

Their appearance highlighted environmental protection efforts in Antigua, where coastal erosion and marine pollution remain important concerns. The visit also reflected the King’s long-standing interest in conservation and the couple’s programme of community engagements during the Caribbean tour.

The beach cleanup offered a more informal moment during a trip that has attracted significant attention over discussions surrounding Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade and calls for reparations.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are in the Caribbean for the Commonwealth summit, meeting leaders and communities while carrying out engagements focused on education, environmental protection and youth development.
