Florida Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Stabbing Father to Death During Facebook Marketplace Car Dispute

A Facebook Marketplace vehicle sale ended in deadly violence when a disagreement over a car title escalated into a fatal stabbing inside a Florida family’s home.

Joseph Michael Lynch, 47, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder and burglary with assault or battery in the killing of Kenny Dale Ashby, 33, prosecutors announced.

The incident happened late on July 3 in Springfield, Florida. According to prosecutors, Lynch had purchased a vehicle from Ashby through Facebook Marketplace, but the transaction became contentious when the vehicle did not come with a title. Ashby reportedly told Lynch he would try to obtain the document, but Lynch grew angry over the delay.

Prosecutors said Lynch later arrived at Ashby’s home, kicked down the door and stabbed him repeatedly. Ashby’s wife, young daughter and three other adults were inside the house when the attack occurred.

Ashby was taken to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries in the early hours of July 4. Authorities said Lynch took the occupants’ cellphones before leaving the home. He was arrested nearby, and police reported that he admitted his involvement.

At sentencing, Ashby’s widow described the devastating impact of losing her husband and the lasting fear her family now experiences in what was once their home. A statement from Ashby’s daughter also expressed the profound grief of losing her father.

Prosecutor Peter Overstreet said the family agreed with the plea and the 40-year prison sentence, which the court ordered to run concurrently for the two charges.

The case serves as a stark reminder of how an online marketplace transaction can turn dangerous when a dispute escalates. Authorities encourage people buying or selling items online to take precautions and prioritize their safety when meeting strangers.
