THE HEIRESS DISGUISED AS A POOR BRIDE

Chapter 1 — The Bride They Thought Was Worthless

The night before her wedding, Isabella Hartley made a decision that would change her life forever.

As the only daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the country, she had everything money could buy—except the one thing she wanted most: someone who would love her for who she was, not for her fortune.

So she made a secret plan.

She would hide her identity, abandon her designer clothes, and marry as an ordinary, penniless woman. If a man could love her without knowing her wealth, she would finally believe his love was real.

And she thought she had found that man in Daniel Carter.

Daniel was handsome, hardworking, and from a respectable family that owned a successful construction business. When Isabella first met him, he had treated her with kindness, never asking about her background or the money she might possess.

But she had no idea how quickly kindness could disappear when money was no longer part of the picture.

On their wedding day, Isabella arrived at the Carter family estate wearing a simple ivory dress she had bought with her own savings. Her hair was neatly tied back, and the only jewelry she wore was a modest silver ring.

Daniel’s mother, Margaret, looked her up and down with open disgust.

“Is this what my son is marrying?” she asked loudly enough for the guests to hear. “A girl who cannot even afford a proper wedding dress?”

A few relatives laughed.

Isabella lowered her eyes, hiding the pain behind a quiet smile.

Daniel stood beside her, his jaw tightening.

“Mother, please. Today is our wedding day.”

“Your wedding day?” Margaret scoffed. “You have thrown away your future for a woman who brings nothing into this family!”

“She brings me happiness,” Daniel replied.

For a brief moment, Isabella’s heart warmed.

Perhaps he really was different.

Perhaps love could survive even the ugliest words.

Then Margaret delivered her next blow.

“Very well. If she wants to be part of this family, she can earn her place. Starting tomorrow, she will help the servants with the household chores. Let us see how long your precious bride lasts without luxury.”

The room fell silent.

Isabella turned toward Daniel, waiting for him to defend her.

He looked at his mother, then at the relatives watching them.

Finally, he took Isabella’s hand.

“Just endure it for a while,” he whispered. “I promise things will get better.”

Those words hurt more than his mother’s insults.

He had asked her to endure humiliation rather than stand firmly by her side.

Still, Isabella nodded.

She had come here to discover the truth, and she would not abandon her plan after a single difficult day.

That evening, while the guests celebrated downstairs, Isabella entered the small bedroom Margaret had assigned them. Instead of the luxurious master suite Daniel had once described, it contained an old wardrobe, a narrow bed, and a window overlooking the servants’ quarters.

On the bedside table lay a folded note.

You are not good enough for my son. Leave before you embarrass yourself further.

There was no signature.

There didn’t need to be.

Isabella quietly folded the paper and placed it in her pocket.

Then she opened the tiny suitcase she had brought with her. Beneath her plain clothes lay a second phone, one that no one in the Carter family knew existed.

She dialed a number.

“Miss Hartley,” her family’s lawyer answered immediately. “Congratulations on your wedding. Shall I proceed with the transfer of your inheritance into your personal account?”

Isabella glanced at the closed bedroom door.

“Not yet,” she whispered. “I need more time.”

“Are you certain? Your father specifically instructed us to protect you from anyone who might exploit you.”

“I know.”

Her voice trembled, but she forced herself to continue.

“I want to find out whether my husband truly loves me. And I want to know whether he will ever choose me when his family makes him choose between us.”

After ending the call, Isabella stood by the window and looked down at the illuminated garden.

She had entered this marriage hoping to find a man who would love her without knowing she was an heiress.

But as she watched Daniel laughing with his family below, she realized something terrifying.

She might have to lose everything she had ever dreamed of before discovering whether her husband was worth keeping.

And downstairs, Margaret Carter was already planning how to drive the poor bride out of her son’s life.

She had no idea that the woman she despised could buy the entire Carter estate—and the company her family depended on—with a single signature.

Nor did she know that Isabella’s next move would expose a secret that could destroy them all.
