The Heir’s Revenge Part 3: The Truth He Could Never Bury

Part 3: The Truth He Could Never Bury

Three days later, I was transferred to a private recovery room under police protection.

My baby remained in the neonatal intensive care unit, where doctors monitored every heartbeat. I could visit only for short periods, but each time I held my child’s tiny hand, I found another reason to keep fighting.

Then Daniel returned with news.

“We traced the messages,” he said. “They came from a prepaid phone purchased near the Vance estate. We’re still investigating who used it.”

He placed Evelyn’s sealed letter in front of me.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten note and a photograph.

The photograph showed Evelyn standing beside a young woman outside a hospital. The woman looked remarkably like me.

But it wasn’t me.

It was my mother.

My breath caught.

My mother had died when I was sixteen. She had rarely spoken about her past, and I had grown up believing she had no connection to the Vance family.

I turned to the letter.

To the woman who may one day become part of this family,

If you’re reading this, Arthur has probably hidden the truth for far too long.

Your mother and I were close friends. She helped me uncover what my father was doing inside the company. When I discovered that he was falsifying records and using people to conceal his crimes, I tried to expose him.

I failed.

But before I died, I entrusted your mother with the original documents. She promised to protect them until the right person could bring the truth to light.

My eyes filled with tears.

My mother hadn’t been an ordinary woman caught in an unfortunate life.

She had been protecting evidence against the Vance family.

And somehow, those secrets had followed me into my marriage.

At the bottom of the letter, Evelyn had written one final sentence.

If Clara Vance is carrying the next heir, make sure she knows that the child is entitled to more than money. The child deserves the truth.

I looked up at Daniel.

“Does this mean my mother left something behind?”

“Possibly,” he answered. “We’re reviewing the evidence now.”

Before he could say more, a nurse entered.

“Mrs. Vance, your husband has requested permission to speak with you.”

My heart tightened.

I almost refused.

But I needed answers.

Julian arrived under escort, wearing a plain gray detention uniform. His expensive watch was gone. His hair was disheveled, and the arrogance that once defined him had been replaced by desperation.

“Clara,” he whispered.

I looked at him without speaking.

He glanced at the letter on my bed.

“Evelyn’s letter,” he said. “You weren’t supposed to find that.”

“Why? What happened to your sister?”

His face changed.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he lowered his eyes.

“My father told me she died because she was unstable. But I knew she had been investigating him. I knew she was afraid.”

“And you never told me?”

“I thought I could protect you by keeping you out of it.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Protect me? You punched me while I was carrying your child.”

He flinched.

“I know what I did was unforgivable.”

“No, Julian. You know you’re losing everything. That’s not the same thing.”

His eyes grew wet.

“Please. I still love you.”

I stared at the man who had once been my entire world.

“Love doesn’t leave someone bleeding on the floor.”

He reached toward me, but the officer immediately stopped him.

Then Julian whispered something that made my heart stop.

“Chloe wasn’t the only person who knew about the investigation. My father knew you had found the records. He told me that if you ever exposed him, both of us would lose everything.”

I stared at him.

“Did he tell you to hurt me?”

Julian’s silence was answer enough.

He hadn’t merely failed to protect me.

He had chosen his family’s fortune over my life.

I turned away.

“Take him out.”

As the officers led him toward the door, Julian suddenly called my name.

“Clara! There’s something else. Chloe isn’t pregnant with my child.”

I froze.

He swallowed hard.

“She lied to me. She wanted to force me to leave you and claim a place in the family. But the child she says she’s carrying belongs to someone else.”

The officer pulled him into the corridor before he could explain further.

I sat motionless, absorbing the revelation.

The mistress who had mocked my unborn child had built her future on a lie.

But that was no longer my concern.

My baby was alive. The investigation was moving forward. And for the first time, the Vance family could no longer dictate what I was allowed to know.

Daniel picked up the photograph of my mother and Evelyn.

“We’ll find the original documents,” he promised.

I looked toward the window, where the afternoon sun illuminated the hospital garden.

“Find them,” I said. “And make sure the truth comes out.”

Because I was no longer fighting to become the wife Julian wanted.

I was fighting to become the mother my child deserved.

And when the truth about Evelyn’s death finally emerged, the Vance family would discover that the woman they had treated as powerless had become the one person capable of bringing their entire empire to its knees.
