Newly Released Footage Reveals Luigi Mangione’s Arrest and Strip Search in Pennsylvania

Newly released police body-camera footage is offering a closer look at the dramatic arrest of Luigi Mangione, including the moment officers recognized him and the search that followed at a Pennsylvania police station.
The videos, made public in October 2026, show Mangione being taken into custody at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024. He had been sought for five days following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
In the footage, officers approach Mangione while he is sitting at a table wearing a hat, face mask and winter coat. When questioned, he initially presents identification under the name Mark Rosario. Officers continue asking questions before he eventually provides his real identity.
The videos also capture officers searching his belongings. Investigators recovered a firearm, a silencer, ammunition and handwritten materials from his backpack, items that prosecutors have cited in their case. The footage shows an officer reacting after discovering ammunition believed to be connected to the investigation.
Another portion shows Mangione being taken to the police station, where officers conducted a strip search. The newly released recordings provide a more complete view of procedures that had previously been discussed during court hearings.
The footage was unsealed after media organizations sought its release. It had played a role in legal arguments over whether evidence obtained during Mangione’s arrest and subsequent searches could be used in court.
Mangione’s defense challenged aspects of the searches, arguing that certain evidence should be excluded. A judge allowed much of the evidence from the police-station search to be used, while a separate ruling excluded a magazine recovered from his backpack at the restaurant.

Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges connected to Thompson’s death in August 2026 and admitted in federal court that he shot Thompson. He continues to face charges in New York state court, where his attorneys have sought dismissal of the murder case.
The newly unsealed footage has renewed public attention on the arrest, the evidence collected by police and the legal battles that continue to shape the case.
