The Heir’s Secret PART 2 — THE TRUTH HE BURIED

The Heir’s Secret

PART 2 — THE TRUTH HE BURIED

Vincent Moretti had built his empire on one simple rule: never trust anyone who had something to gain from him.

Yet he had trusted Sophia Reynolds with everything—even when doing so meant abandoning his own wife.

Now, standing inside his private office, he stared at the photograph Marco had placed on his desk.

Sophia was kissing a man outside a hotel in downtown Chicago.

The man was Daniel Hayes, her former boyfriend—and a man Vincent had once employed as his financial adviser.

“Find him,” Vincent ordered.

Marco hesitated. “We already have a lead. Daniel left Chicago two weeks ago. But before disappearing, he transferred a large sum of money to an account registered under Sophia’s name.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“How much?”

“Three million dollars.”

For a moment, the room fell silent.

Three million dollars. A false pregnancy timeline. A DNA report proving the child wasn’t his.

Sophia hadn’t simply betrayed him. She had planned everything.

“Bring her to me.”

Twenty minutes later, Sophia entered the office carrying the newborn in her arms. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but she still tried to approach Vincent as though nothing had changed.

“Vincent, please. You have to let me explain.”

He remained behind his desk.

“Put the baby in the nurse’s care. He’s innocent in this.”

Sophia reluctantly handed the child to the waiting nurse.

Then Vincent placed the photograph in front of her.

“Who is Daniel Hayes?”

Her face drained of color.

“I can explain that.”

“Then explain why he paid you three million dollars.”

Sophia began crying harder.

“Daniel was blackmailing me! He threatened to expose our past, and I was afraid you’d hurt him.”

“You expect me to believe you took his money to protect him?”

“No!” She reached for Vincent’s hand, but he pulled away. “I loved you. I wanted to give you the family you always wanted. I thought if you believed the baby was yours, everything would finally be right.”

Vincent looked at her with disgust.

“You wanted my name, my money, and my protection.”

“I love you!”

“No. You loved what being Mrs. Moretti could give you.”

His voice was quiet, which frightened her more than shouting would have.

He called his security chief.

“Sophia is no longer permitted access to my properties or accounts. Arrange appropriate legal counsel for the paternity dispute, and make sure the child receives everything he needs.”

Sophia stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re throwing me away for Claire? After everything?”

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“Claire didn’t make you lie.”

Sophia left the office under the supervision of his security team.

For the first time since the birth, Vincent felt no satisfaction at having an heir—or the absence of one.

All he could think about was Claire.

He called her again.

This time, she answered.

“Claire.”

His voice cracked slightly at the sound of her breathing.

“Please, just listen to me.”

“I have nothing to say to you, Vincent.”

“The baby wasn’t mine. Sophia lied about everything.”

“That must be difficult for you.”

He closed his eyes.

“Don’t do this. I know I’ve hurt you, but I need to see you. We can fix this.”

A bitter laugh came through the phone.

“Fix what? Your mistress? Your lies? The five years I spent waiting for my husband to remember that he had a wife?”

“I made a mistake.”

“No, Vincent. You made a choice. Every time you chose her over me, you made that choice again.”

He had faced armed rivals without blinking. He had negotiated with men who wanted him dead.

Yet he couldn’t find a single sentence that would make his wife stay on the phone.

“Tell me where you are,” he whispered.

“No.”

“Claire, please.”

“You don’t get to order me around anymore.”

The call ended.

Vincent remained motionless, the phone pressed against his ear.

Then Marco entered, carrying a sealed envelope.

“Boss, we found this in the old storage room. It was hidden among Mrs. Moretti’s personal documents.”

Vincent opened it.

Inside was an old medical report, dated three years earlier, along with a handwritten note in Claire’s familiar handwriting.

I never told Vincent because I didn’t want him to sacrifice his future for me.

His eyes moved to the medical report.

And suddenly, the room seemed to tilt.

Three years earlier, Claire had suffered a medical emergency after an attack on one of Vincent’s business properties. She had told him she was fine after recovering, and he had believed her.

But the report revealed something she had never shared.

A serious injury had left her with a complicated reproductive condition. Carrying a pregnancy could put her life at considerable risk.

Beneath the report was a letter addressed to Vincent.

He unfolded it with trembling fingers.

Vincent, if you ever read this, please understand that I wanted to give you a child more than anything. But the doctors warned me about the risks.

I never told you because I knew how much being a father meant to you. I was afraid you would stay with me out of duty, and I wanted you to stay because you loved me.

If you ever find someone who can give you the family you dream of, I won’t stand in your way.

I only hope that, one day, you’ll remember that I loved you before you became the man everyone fears.

Vincent sank into his chair.

He had spent years blaming Claire for their childless marriage, even when he rarely admitted those feelings aloud.

He had allowed Sophia to convince him that she understood his pain better than his wife did.

Meanwhile, Claire had been carrying her fear alone.

And he had rewarded her silence with betrayal.

“Find out everything about the attack three years ago,” Vincent ordered.

Marco nodded, but his expression was troubled.

“Boss, there’s something else. The original investigation was closed unusually quickly. Several records are missing.”

“Who handled it?”

Marco placed another document on the desk.

“Your older brother, Anthony.”

Vincent looked up sharply.

Anthony had died two years earlier in what everyone believed was a car accident.

For the first time, Vincent wondered whether the past he thought he understood had been a lie, too.

And if Claire had known more than she ever told him, he needed to discover why.

Not to bring her back by force.

But because he finally understood that she might have been protecting him from something far worse than a broken marriage.
