The Little Girl Who Woke the Mafia Boss

Part 2 – The Secret He Had Forgotten

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Isabella Moretti stood behind her desk, waiting for an answer.

“Clara,” she repeated. “Why were you standing beside my brother five years ago?”

I stared at the photograph.

Five years earlier, I had been twenty-two. Vanessa Cole had been my closest friend, almost like a sister. She had introduced me to wealthy people, taken me to exclusive parties, and promised that one day we would both have everything we dreamed of.

That was how I first met Lorenzo Moretti.

He hadn’t been the terrifying mafia billionaire everyone feared back then. He was younger, charming, and surprisingly gentle with me.

We had spoken for hours that evening.

But the following morning, Vanessa accused me of stealing confidential documents from her company. She showed everyone falsified evidence, and I lost my job, my reputation, and eventually my home.

I disappeared from that world.

I never saw Lorenzo again.

Until now.

“I met him once,” I finally whispered. “That photograph was taken at a charity event. I didn’t know who he really was.”

Isabella studied my face.

“That’s not what my brother’s private journal says.”

My stomach dropped.

“What journal?”

She opened another folder and removed a small black notebook.

“After the accident, we searched his office for anything that might help us understand what happened. We found this hidden in his bedroom.”

She turned to a marked page.

There was a name written in Lorenzo’s handwriting.

Clara Bennett.

Beneath it were five words.

The woman I couldn’t save.

My knees almost gave way.

“What does that mean?”

Isabella closed the notebook.

“That’s what I want you to tell me.”

Before I could answer, the office door suddenly opened.

Nurse Elena rushed inside.

“Miss Moretti! You need to come upstairs immediately.”

Isabella stood.

“What happened?”

Elena looked at me, then back at Isabella.

“Mr. Moretti’s neurological readings have changed again. His fingers are moving, and the doctor believes he may be responding to something.”

“Something?”

Elena swallowed.

“Emma.”

My heart stopped.

We hurried upstairs.

When I entered Lorenzo’s bedroom, Emma was sitting on the carpet beside his bed, playing with her stuffed bunny.

“Mommy!”

She smiled and lifted both arms.

I picked her up, then looked toward the monitors.

Dr. Harris stood beside the equipment, looking astonished.

“Mrs. Bennett, could you ask your daughter to speak to him?”

I hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because every time she speaks, his brain activity changes. We’ve repeated the test several times.”

I looked at Lorenzo.

His face was pale, his dark hair slightly disheveled against the pillow. Tattoos covered part of his arm, disappearing beneath the white hospital blanket.

He looked nothing like the powerful man whose name frightened half of Manhattan.

Emma leaned over my shoulder.

“Hello, sleepy man.”

She waved.

“Wake up. Mommy says sleepy people need sunshine.”

Then she began singing.

You Are My Sunshine.

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

Suddenly, Lorenzo’s fingers moved.

This time, everyone saw it.

His hand slowly curled around the edge of the blanket.

Dr. Harris rushed closer.

“That’s purposeful movement!”

Isabella covered her mouth.

And then something happened that made my heart nearly burst.

Lorenzo’s eyelids trembled.

Once.

Twice.

Then his eyes opened.

They were dark, exhausted, and confused.

His gaze moved across the room before finally settling on Emma.

The little girl smiled.

“Hi!”

Lorenzo stared at her for several seconds.

His lips moved.

A faint, broken whisper escaped.

“Sunshine…”

I froze.

That was the last word I had expected to hear from him.

Because five years earlier, on the night we first met, Lorenzo had called me his sunshine.

Then his eyes shifted toward me.

His expression changed.

“Clara?”

I couldn’t move.

He tried to lift his hand.

“Where… have you been?”

Before I could answer, his eyes closed again.

The monitor continued beeping steadily.

Dr. Harris immediately checked his condition.

“He’s stable. Don’t panic. He’s exhausted, but this is an extraordinary development.”

Isabella began crying.

But I wasn’t looking at her.

I was staring at Lorenzo.

He remembered me.

After five years, he still remembered me.

And I suddenly understood that the past I had tried so hard to bury had just awakened with him.
