The Little Pumpkin PART 2 — THE MAN WHO NEVER DIED

The Little Pumpkin
PART 2 — THE MAN WHO NEVER DIED
The engine roared outside the mansion.
Dante immediately turned toward his head of security.
“Lock down the property. Check every vehicle, every entrance, and every camera recording from the last hour.”
“Yes, Boss.”
Claire held Lily tightly, her face drained of color.
“Mr. Moretti, what is happening? Why would someone tell my daughter that Daniel isn’t dead?”
Dante looked at her.
“Because Daniel was my best friend. And if what Lily heard is true, someone has been lying to us for three years.”
Claire shook her head.
“That’s impossible. I saw his wedding ring. I saw his identification. The police told me—”
“The police told you what someone wanted you to believe.”
His voice was quiet, but there was something dangerous beneath it.
Before Claire could respond, a bodyguard hurried into the hall.
“Boss, we found something in the rose garden.”
He placed a small black envelope on the table.
Dante opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed Daniel standing beside a woman wearing a red hood. The photograph appeared to have been taken recently.
On the back, someone had written six words:
STOP LOOKING, OR SHE DIES NEXT.
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
He looked at Claire.
“Do you recognize this woman?”
Claire studied the photograph.
Her lips parted.
Then she began trembling.
“That’s… that’s Daniel’s sister.”
“Daniel had a sister?”
Claire nodded slowly.
“Her name was Elena. She disappeared shortly before Daniel’s accident. He told me she had gotten involved with dangerous people. I thought she had left the country.”
Dante stared at the photograph again.
He remembered Elena.
She had attended Daniel’s funeral but vanished before anyone could speak to her. At the time, Dante had assumed grief had driven her away.
Now he understood something was terribly wrong.
“Claire, I need you to tell me everything Daniel said before he died.”
Claire looked down at Lily.
“Can we talk somewhere private?”
Dante nodded.
He ordered his men to escort them to his study.
Once inside, Lily climbed onto a large leather sofa and began arranging her chocolates.
Claire sat opposite Dante.
“Three days before Daniel disappeared, he came home terrified. He kept checking the windows and telling me not to answer unknown calls.”
“What did he say?”
“He said someone inside your organization was stealing money. Millions of dollars. He had evidence, but he couldn’t trust anyone.”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because the next morning, Daniel was gone. Then the police arrived with his belongings. A week later, someone sent me a message saying that if I ever mentioned the investigation, Lily and I would disappear too.”
Dante slowly leaned back.
For three years, he had believed his friend died because of a tragic accident.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s wife had been living in fear under his own roof.
“Who sent the message?”
“I don’t know. It came from an anonymous number.”
Dante’s phone suddenly vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown sender.
Your friend is alive. But if you want him back, bring the Bennett girl to the old railway station at midnight. Come alone.
Dante read it twice.
Then he looked toward Lily.
The little girl was struggling to open a chocolate wrapper.
“Mr. Moretti?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Are you going to find the man who made Mommy cry?”
Dante’s expression softened.
“Yes.”
Lily thought for a moment.
“Then you should take my pumpkin.”
She handed him the little orange decoration from her costume.
“It’s lucky.”
Dante accepted it carefully.
“I’ll keep it safe.”
But when Claire saw the little pumpkin in his hand, she suddenly remembered something.
Daniel had once made an identical decoration for Lily’s first Halloween.
He had hidden a tiny silver key inside its fabric stem.
Claire had kept it for years.
She reached into her handbag and pulled out the old decoration.
“Mr. Moretti…”
Dante looked up.
“Daniel left something for Lily. Something he told me never to throw away.”
She placed the pumpkin on the desk and carefully opened its stitched stem.
A tiny silver key fell onto the polished wood.
Dante stared at it.
For the first time that night, he felt certain.
Daniel hadn’t simply disappeared.
He had left behind a trail.
And someone had just made the mistake of bringing Dante Moretti back into the hunt.
