The Night He Chose Her Part 3: The Woman He Never Knew

The Night He Chose Her
Part 3: The Woman He Never Knew
At 10:15 that morning, Hannah made a decision.
She wasn’t going to wait for Caleb to explain anything.
She called her private attorney, Rebecca Collins.
“Rebecca, I need you to investigate my husband’s financial records, including anything connected to Mara Lennox.”
“Is this about last night’s attack?”
“Yes. And I need you to find out what happened on September 14, five years ago.”
There was a brief silence.
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
Hannah looked at the wedding photograph on her bedside table.
Caleb was smiling in it, his arms wrapped around her waist.
She remembered how happy she had been.
“I’ve never been more certain.”
Two hours later, Rebecca arrived with a folder.
Inside were copies of old bank transfers, medical records, and a document from a private adoption agency.
Hannah’s hands trembled as she read.
Five years earlier, Mara had been involved in a serious financial scandal connected to Silas Vane. She had discovered that Vane was trafficking money through several legitimate companies.
Before disappearing, she had given Caleb evidence.
But there was another detail.
On September 14, the same day Hannah and Caleb got married, Caleb had signed an agreement with Mara.
It was a financial arrangement guaranteeing that she and her child would receive protection and money.
Hannah read the final page twice.
“He married me while promising to protect her?”
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s what the document suggests.”
Hannah felt sick.
“Was I ever part of his plan?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“I found something else.”
She placed a second document on the table.
It was an old medical report.
Hannah recognized the clinic’s name immediately.
St. Augustine Women’s Medical Center.
Her breath caught.
“What is this?”
“Five years ago, you were treated there after a serious accident. Your medical records indicate that you received an emergency blood transfusion.”
Hannah frowned.
“I remember the accident. I was unconscious for two days.”
Rebecca turned the page.
“The blood donor was listed as an unidentified woman. But the original donor record was recently accessed.”
“By Caleb?”
“Yes.”
Hannah looked at the name written in the report.
Mara Lennox.
For a moment, the room went completely silent.
“Are you saying Mara donated blood to me?”
“That’s what the record indicates.”
Hannah stared at the document.
Why would Mara donate blood to the woman who would eventually marry her former fiancé?
And why had Caleb kept it secret?
Before she could ask another question, the bedroom door opened.
Caleb walked in.
His expression was exhausted, and his shirt was stained with dust.
He stopped when he saw Rebecca.
“What’s she doing here?”
Hannah closed the folder.
“Helping me understand my marriage.”
Caleb looked at the documents.
Then his eyes landed on the medical report.
“Where did you get that?”
“Does it matter? Is it true?”
He slowly pulled out a chair.
“Yes.”
“Why did Mara donate blood to me?”
“Because she was the only compatible donor available that night.”
“And you knew?”
“I found out afterward.”
Hannah’s voice broke.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Caleb looked down.
“Because Mara asked me not to.”
Hannah almost laughed.
“Of course. Another promise you made to her.”
He leaned forward.
“Hannah, listen to me. There’s something you don’t understand about that night.”
“Then explain it.”
Caleb looked at Rebecca.
“Can we have a moment alone?”
“No,” Hannah answered immediately. “Whatever you have to say, you can say it in front of my attorney.”
He stared at her for several seconds.
Then he finally spoke.
“Five years ago, Mara was pregnant with my child. When she disappeared, I believed she had died. I met you four months later.”
Hannah felt her stomach tighten.
“Go on.”
“Your accident happened a few weeks before our wedding. Mara was the one who saved your life. When she recovered from the incident involving Vane, she contacted me again.”
“And you decided to marry me anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Caleb looked at her.
“Because I fell in love with you.”
Hannah shook her head.
“Then why did you spend our marriage protecting another woman?”
His eyes filled with something she couldn’t identify.
“Because I made a promise to her. I promised I’d protect her son.”
“And what did you promise me?”
Caleb said nothing.
Hannah slowly removed her wedding ring.
She placed it on the table between them.
“I don’t know who you are anymore.”
His expression changed.
“Hannah, don’t.”
“I need time. I need answers. And most importantly, I need you to stop making decisions for me.”
He reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
Then Rebecca’s phone rang.
She answered, listened for several seconds, and suddenly went pale.
“What happened?” Hannah asked.
Rebecca slowly lowered the phone.
“The hospital just confirmed something about your prenatal records.”
Caleb stood.
“What?”
Rebecca looked directly at Hannah.
“Someone requested a paternity test for your unborn son three weeks ago.”
Hannah’s face went cold.
“Who requested it?”
Rebecca swallowed.
“Caleb Rourke.”
Hannah turned toward her husband.
He didn’t deny it.
Instead, he whispered, “I can explain.”
But before he could continue, another message arrived on Hannah’s phone.
This time, it contained a photograph.
A little boy with dark hair and Caleb’s unmistakable blue eyes stood beside Mara.
Beneath the photograph were twelve words:
Your husband knows the truth. Your son may not be his.
Hannah slowly raised her eyes.
“Caleb…”
He looked terrified.
And for the first time since their wedding, the powerful billionaire had absolutely nothing to say.
To be continued…
