THE RANCHER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIS GRANDDAUGHTER AT DINNER—THEN SHE SHOWED HIM A PHOTOGRAPH OF HIS SON

PART 1: THE GIRL AT THE BIRTHDAY TABLE

The little girl stood at the entrance of Montana’s wealthiest ranch, clutching an old photograph.

“I’m your granddaughter,” she whispered.

Seventy-year-old Walter Bennett slowly lowered his wineglass.

Twenty guests stared at the ten-year-old girl in muddy boots.

“I don’t have a granddaughter,” he snapped.

“My name is Lily Bennett. My daddy was Daniel Bennett.”

The room went silent.

Daniel was the son Walter had thrown out twelve years earlier. They had never spoken again.

“Who sent you?” Walter demanded. “Your mother? How much money does she want?”

“Nobody sent me, Grandpa.”

“Don’t call me that!”

Tears filled Lily’s eyes, but she stepped forward and placed a photograph beside his birthday cake.

Walter looked down.

His hands began to shake.

There was Daniel, smiling beside a young woman holding a newborn baby.

On the back, Daniel had written:

“Our little Lily. I wish Dad could meet her.”

Walter swallowed hard.

“Where is your father now?”

Lily looked at the floor.

“Daddy passed away last winter.”

Walter gripped the edge of the table.

Then Lily opened her backpack and took out a bundle of letters.

“He wrote to you every Christmas, Grandpa. But he was always afraid to send them.”

She handed Walter one final envelope.

“Daddy said you needed to know what really happened the night you sent him away.”

Walter opened it.

The first sentence made his blood run cold.

“Dad, the person who destroyed our family has been sitting beside you all these years…”

Below those words was a name.

RICHARD BENNETT.

Walter slowly turned toward his younger brother.

Richard stood up so suddenly that his chair crashed to the floor.

“Don’t read another word, Walter!”

But the little girl had one more secret about her father—one that could cost Richard everything.
