Three Colorado Teens Accused of Fatal Rock-Throwing Spree That Killed 20-Year-Old Woman

Three teenagers in Colorado faced first-degree murder charges after authorities accused them of throwing large rocks at passing vehicles in a series of incidents that ended with the death of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell.
Bartell was driving in the Denver-area community of Jefferson County on April 19, 2023, while speaking with a friend on the phone. According to investigators, a large landscaping rock smashed through her windshield and struck her. Her vehicle went off the road, and the phone call suddenly went silent.
Concerned, her friend used a phone-location feature to find her. Bartell was discovered inside her car, but she could not be saved.
Authorities said several vehicles were targeted that evening, with at least seven vehicles struck by large rocks. Other drivers were also reportedly injured during the incidents.
The suspects, Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak, were all 18 at the time of their arrests. Investigators alleged that they had been involved in the rock-throwing spree. Court documents also described an especially disturbing detail: one of the teenagers allegedly took a photograph of Bartell’s damaged vehicle after the incident, reportedly as a “memento.”

The case shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about the danger of throwing objects at moving vehicles. What may appear to be reckless behavior can have devastating consequences for drivers and their families.
The charges described in the original 2023 reports were allegations at that stage of the case. Later proceedings changed the status of the prosecution, so the initial charges should not be mistaken for the final legal outcome.
