13-Year-Old Boy Dies After His Shirt Gets Caught Inside a Miami Playground Slide

A family in Miami is grieving the loss of a 13-year-old boy after a tragic playground incident in which his T-shirt reportedly became caught inside an enclosed slide, tightening around his neck.

Olvin Cabrera Valladares was found trapped inside a tube slide at Shenandoah Park on September 25, 2026. According to his mother, Estefanía Valladares, a screw inside the slide caught his shirt, leaving him unable to free himself.

A man who was visiting the park with his children discovered the teenager and tried to pull him out. He then attempted to provide first aid while emergency responders rushed to the scene. Olvin was taken to the hospital, where doctors worked to save his life. Six days later, on October 1, he was declared brain dead, according to his family.

The loss has devastated his mother, who said her youngest child had his whole life ahead of him. She has since urged parents to pay close attention to playground safety and potential hazards in equipment children use every day.

The incident has also prompted calls for a wider safety review. Miami officials subsequently ordered enclosed slides at four city parks to be closed while safety assessments were conducted. The circumstances surrounding Olvin’s death remain under investigation, and officials have not publicly confirmed every detail of how the incident occurred.

His family is now seeking answers about what happened and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
