Two Mountain Marmots Mysteriously Appear in California Cities Before Being Returned to the Wild

California, USA — September 28, 2026

Two mountain marmots have been returned to the wild after wildlife rescuers discovered the animals in unexpected locations across California’s San Francisco Bay Area earlier this month.

Unexpected Visitors in the Bay Area

The first yellow-bellied marmot was discovered in San Francisco’s Mission District on September 5. The animal was found far from the high-altitude mountain environments where the species normally lives.

Less than a week later, a second marmot was spotted at a job site in Antioch, about 45 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Wildlife rescuers from Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue safely captured both animals and brought them to their facility for care and observation.

How Did They Get There?

Rescuers believe the two marmots may have accidentally travelled in vehicles coming down from mountainous areas.

Yellow-bellied marmots are known to climb underneath vehicles, particularly around the engine compartment. They may be attracted to warmth or radiator fluid, potentially allowing them to remain hidden while a vehicle travels long distances.

Because the animals were discovered separately but within days of each other, rescuers considered the possibility that both had arrived in the Bay Area after hitching rides from the Sierra Nevada region.

A Safe Journey Back to the Mountains

After caring for the marmots and trying to determine where they originally came from, wildlife rescuers released both animals near Lake Tahoe.

The release took place approximately 18 days after the first marmot was discovered in San Francisco. Although rescuers could not identify the animals’ exact original locations, the Lake Tahoe area was considered a suitable mountain environment for their return to the wild.

Both marmots were reported to be physically unharmed after their unusual journeys through California’s urban areas.

A Reminder for Drivers in Mountain Areas

The unusual rescue has also highlighted a potential danger for motorists travelling through the Sierra Nevada.

Wildlife experts recommend checking underneath the hood and around the vehicle before leaving mountainous areas, particularly after the vehicle has been parked for an extended period.

For the two rescued marmots, what began as a mysterious appearance in California cities ended with a return to a natural mountain habitat.
