65-Year-Old Woman Killed in Shark Attack During Morning Swim — Her Love of the Ocean Ended in Tragedy

A 65-year-old woman was killed in a shark attack during an early morning swim off South Africa’s southeastern coast, leaving her family and fellow swimmers devastated.
Janine Lochrenberg, a retired medical professional and accomplished musician, was swimming with an open-water swimming group at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, on the morning of October 20, 2026, when the attack occurred.
Witnesses said swimmers noticed she was in distress and rushed to help. She suffered severe bites to her thigh and upper arm, according to reports. Fellow swimmers brought her toward shore and attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her death has deeply affected the local swimming community, where she was known as a dedicated swimmer who treasured her time in the ocean. Friends remembered her as kind, thoughtful and quietly supportive, while fellow musicians paid tribute to her talent and contribution to their ensemble.
Lochrenberg’s sister, Margot, described her as someone with a profound connection to the water. Despite understanding the risks of swimming in an area where sharks are present, she continued to pursue the activity she loved.
The tragedy prompted local authorities to close Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach until further notice. Officials urged the public to stay out of the water at the affected locations and follow safety instructions at other beaches.

Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the species of shark involved.
Fatal shark attacks remain uncommon, but the incident has renewed concern among beachgoers and swimmers along South Africa’s coastline. For those who knew Lochrenberg, however, the focus is on remembering a woman whose love of the ocean was central to her life.
