Family Honors Little Girl Who Died at 8 After Suffering Severe Brain Injury as a Baby

KANSAS — A family in Topeka is turning the heartbreaking loss of a little girl into a mission to protect other children, hosting a special community celebration in memory of Mireya, who lived with severe developmental disabilities believed to have resulted from shaken baby syndrome.

The third annual Miracle Mireya Butterfly Family Celebration took place at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center on October 15, 2026, bringing families together to honor her memory and raise awareness about the dangers of shaking infants.

A Little Girl Who Changed a Family’s Life

Kathy and Dan Keck began fostering Mireya when she was just eight months old.

She had severe developmental delays believed to be associated with injuries caused by shaking during infancy.

Despite the challenges she faced, Mireya became a deeply loved member of the family.

Her loved ones remember her connection to the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, a place where she enjoyed spending time.

A Moment Her Mother Never Forgot

Kathy recalled a particularly emotional period when Mireya was receiving intensive care at Children’s Mercy.

After several days of limited responsiveness, the little girl opened her eyes.

For Kathy, that moment became a lasting reminder of Mireya’s impact on the people around her.

She came to believe that her daughter’s life could help bring meaningful change by encouraging others to protect vulnerable children.

Turning Heartbreak Into Awareness

Mireya died at eight years old.

Following her death, the family established a foundation dedicated to raising awareness of shaken baby syndrome and preventing similar tragedies.

The annual Butterfly Family Celebration has become an important part of that mission.

Rather than focusing exclusively on grief, the event encourages families to gather, celebrate childhood and learn about infant safety.

A Community Comes Together for Mireya

The October 15 celebration marked the event’s third year.

Families attended the free gathering at the Discovery Center, where butterfly-themed activities helped honor Mireya’s memory.

Her family also encourages people to perform acts of kindness in her name.

Through the event, Mireya’s loved ones hope her story will continue reaching parents and caregivers, reminding communities of the importance of protecting babies from preventable injuries.
