72-Year-Old Hiker Found Alive After Days in the Wilderness
A 72-year-old woman has been found alive after spending several days injured in remote Northern California wilderness, following a solo camping trip that turned into a desperate search-and-rescue operation.
She Failed to Return From Her Trip
Mary Beth Granbery left for a multi-day camping trip in Northern California on September 28. She was expected to return by October 1, but her family became concerned when she did not come back and reported her missing on October 2.

Her Vehicle Became the First Major Clue
Search teams found Granbery’s camper van at the Cabin Creek Trailhead on October 3. Authorities from Shasta and Siskiyou counties then launched a joint search through difficult terrain.
Rescuers Found Her Near a Creek
Granbery was located the following morning near Cabin Creek, several miles from the trailhead. She was conscious but had suffered serious injuries after apparently falling down a steep embankment.
Officials also said she was experiencing the effects of exposure and had a significant knee injury. Investigators believe she may have gone off the trail while on the trip.

A Difficult Rescue
The search area included steep canyons, creeks, fallen trees and rough terrain. California Highway Patrol Air Operations eventually hoisted Granbery from the area and transported her for medical treatment.
She Survived the Ordeal
Granbery was taken to a medical center in Redding and was reported to be in stable condition. Her injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening.
Her rescue has also prompted officials to remind hikers and campers to tell someone where they are going, provide an expected return time and remain in place if they become lost.
