Three college students were killed and another was critically injured after a BMW crashed through the outer barrier of Mumbai’s Coastal Road and plunged nearly 75 feet early Sunday morning, September 20.

The accident happened at around 5:20 a.m. near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College. The car was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle. Police said excessive speed may have contributed to the crash.

The victims were identified as 21-year-old Sanay Gujjar, who was driving, 19-year-old Aditya Jakasania and 17-year-old Dhairya Sheth. Another passenger, 23-year-old Aditya Oswal, suffered critical injuries and was taken to Nair Hospital for treatment.

According to police, the BMW first struck the outer wall of the elevated road before falling approximately 75 feet into the area below. The vehicle was badly damaged in the impact.

Police said Gujjar, Oswal and Sheth were BBA students at a management college in Vile Parle. Gujjar was originally from Ahmedabad and was living in Mumbai, while police said the BMW belonged to his family.

Meena Jagtap, senior inspector at Tardeo police station, said investigators believed the vehicle had been travelling at a very high speed before the driver lost control.

Authorities have informed the victims’ families and are continuing to question friends and witnesses as part of the investigation.
