Teacher Tackles School Shooter as Father Rushes In to Stop Deadly Oregon Attack

OREGON — A teacher and a father are being praised for their courage after confronting an armed teenager during a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

The attack on October 15, 2026, claimed the lives of three children and a young teacher. Police said the intervention of two adults prevented an already devastating tragedy from becoming even worse.

A Deadly Attack Inside an Elementary School

According to investigators, a 16-year-old former student entered the school grounds carrying a shotgun before forcing his way into a classroom serving children with special needs.

Three students, aged five, eight and eleven, were killed, along with 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert.

A seven-year-old student was seriously injured, while another teacher sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A Teacher Confronts the Gunman

As the attack unfolded, another teacher took extraordinary action to protect the children.

Police said she threw her phone at the attacker before tackling him and physically struggling with him.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz credited her intervention with helping prevent further loss of life. The teacher survived without injuries, and authorities had not publicly identified her at the time of the latest briefing.

A Father Rushes to Help

A 36-year-old father whose two daughters attend the school also intervened.

Authorities said the parent entered with a legally carried handgun and shot the attacker, ending the assault shortly before police arrived.

The father was identified by his family as Kaylub Giamanco. His mother said he was not seeking public recognition and wanted to thank emergency responders, school employees and the wider community for their support.

A Community Mourns Four Victims

Investigators identified the attacker as Griffin J. John II, a former student at the school. His motive and how he obtained the shotgun remained under investigation.

Meanwhile, families and residents gathered outside Silver Rail Elementary School, leaving flowers and candles in memory of those killed.

Lambert’s family described working at the school as her dream job and remembered her dedication to children with special needs.

Courage Amid an Unimaginable Tragedy

Police said officers arrived within approximately three minutes of the first emergency call, by which time the attacker was already dead.

As investigators work to establish what led to the shooting, the community is remembering the victims and recognizing the adults who risked their lives to protect the students.
