MAN RESCUED ALIVE AFTER SPENDING 26 HOURS TRAPPED INSIDE A CAVE BY A MASSIVE ROCKSLIDE

A 31-year-old man has been rescued alive after spending approximately 26 hours trapped inside a cave on the Italian island of Sardinia, following a rockslide that completely blocked the passage behind him. The complex operation required dozens of rescuers to work through unstable debris before they could reach him and bring him back to the surface.

Luca Olmetto, from the town of Codrongianos in northwestern Sardinia, was exploring the Gorroppeddu cave with his girlfriend when the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2026. His survival depended on the efforts of emergency crews who worked through the difficult terrain to reach him.

A Rockslide Suddenly Blocks the Cave Entrance

Olmetto was exploring the cave with his girlfriend when a sudden rockslide blocked the passage. His companion, who was several metres behind him, narrowly avoided being trapped herself and managed to escape the cave.

Realising that Olmetto remained inside, she immediately raised the alarm and alerted emergency services. The blocked entrance left rescuers facing a dangerous and complicated situation, as the fallen rocks and earth prevented them from reaching the trapped explorer through the usual route.

The cave is located in the rugged Urzulei mountain area of central-eastern Sardinia. Its difficult terrain and largely unexplored passages added to the challenges facing the rescue teams.

Rescuers Race Against Time to Reach Him

Emergency crews began working to clear the debris and establish a safe route into the cave. The operation brought together approximately 48 members of Sardinia’s Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, around 30 firefighters and civil protection personnel.

Specialists carefully removed rocks and earth by hand in sections where heavy machinery could not safely reach. They also worked to secure the surrounding area and prevent further collapses from endangering either the trapped man or the rescuers.

A helicopter provided logistical support, transporting equipment and materials needed for the demanding operation. Every stage required careful coordination because the narrow underground passage left little room for mistakes.

A Remarkable Sign of Hope Underground

Despite spending more than a day beneath the surface, Olmetto remained conscious and responsive throughout the ordeal, according to reports. His condition gave rescuers hope as they continued the difficult task of reaching him.

The team eventually cleared enough of the blocked passage to access the trapped explorer. However, reaching him was only part of the challenge. Removing him from the cave required a delicate extraction because loose debris and the confined space made movement hazardous.

Rescuers proceeded cautiously, ensuring that the route was sufficiently secure before moving him toward the exit. Their priority was to prevent further injury while bringing the exhausted explorer out alive.

Finally Brought Back to the Surface

Just after 6 p.m. local time on Monday, October 12, Olmetto was successfully brought out of the cave after approximately 26 hours underground.

Medical personnel were waiting at the scene to assess his condition and provide immediate assistance. He was stabilised before being airlifted to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

The successful extraction brought relief to the rescue crews, his girlfriend and the community following more than a day of uncertainty. The operation demonstrated the importance of specialised training, patience and teamwork in underground emergencies.

A Community Grateful for the Rescue Teams

News of Olmetto’s rescue brought relief to his hometown of Codrongianos. Local officials had followed the operation closely and expressed concern for the explorer and appreciation for those working to reach him.

The incident also highlighted the dangers associated with exploring caves that have not been fully mapped or secured. Rockfalls can occur suddenly, blocking escape routes and leaving explorers dependent on highly specialised rescue teams.

Olmetto’s survival was a positive outcome after a frightening ordeal. For the rescuers who spent hours clearing rubble and navigating the confined passage, the moment he emerged from the cave marked the end of a demanding mission in which careful teamwork proved essential.
