Part 2: The Unraveling

The heavy oak doors of the St. Regis ballroom swung open.

Framed by the doorway stood Arthur Vance, the senior vice president of Private Wealth Management at Vanguard Trust, and the man holding the keys to every major account associated with Sterling Enterprises and the Sterling Foundation.

Beside him stood two federal agents in dark tailored suits.

Bennett froze, his grip on his champagne glass slipping as it shattered against the marble floor.

Arthur? Bennett stammered, his voice betraying his sudden panic. What are you doing here? This is a private event.

Not anymore, Bennett, Arthur said calmly, stepping into the ballroom as the remaining guests sat in stunned silence. Five minutes ago, Vanguard Trust froze all accounts associated with Sterling Enterprises, your personal holding companies, and the Sterling Foundation.

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Bennett’s business partners exchanged alarmed looks.

On what grounds?! Bennett yelled, stepping toward him. You can’t just freeze my assets! I have three hundred witnesses in this room—

You have three hundred witnesses to your fraud, I interrupted over the microphone. My voice echoed crisp and clear across the silent room.

I tapped my phone, triggering the media system. The yacht video faded from the giant screens, replaced by a clear, high-resolution document scan: an offshore account statement detailing millions of dollars siphoned directly from the Sterling Foundation’s children’s hospital fund into a Shell LLC registered in the Cayman Islands under Madison Vale’s name.

Beneath the document was a glowing digital audit log.

For six months, Bennett, you believed I signed whatever paper you threw across the kitchen island, I said, stepping off the stage and walking toward him. You told Madison I was too stupid to understand complex financial structures. But you forgot one detail: my father was an accountant, and before I gave up my career to help you build yours, I managed corporate risk for five years.

Madison let out a choked sob from near the exit, where two security guards hired by my legal team quietly blocked her path.

Celeste, you crazy bitch! Bennett snarled, his composure completely shattering as he charged toward me.

Before he could reach me, the two federal agents stepped between us.

Bennett Sterling, the lead agent announced, pulling a badge from his jacket. We are executing a federal warrant for wire fraud, embezzlement of charitable funds, and aggravated identity theft. You have the right to remain silent…

No! No, this is a mistake! Celeste, tell them! Bennett screamed as the agents pulled his arms behind his back. Mom! Tell them!

His mother, who had treated me with cold condescension for six years, covered her face and turned her back on him. His sister stared blankly at her phone as news of the arrest was already hitting local Atlanta business blogs.

As they slapped the handcuffs on his wrists, Bennett glared at me with pure, unadulterated venom. You think you’ve won? Without me, you have nothing! The house, the cars, the accounts—they’re all in my name!

I smiled, taking a slow sip of my champagne before handing the glass to a nearby waiter.
