A 21-year-old Spanish university student was killed in Mexico only weeks after arriving in the country for an academic exchange program, prompting investigations and protests over violence against women.

Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a student from the University of Granada in Spain, was studying early childhood education at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). She had arrived in Mexico about a month before her death.

According to Mexican authorities, Tacoronte was fatally stabbed with a bladed weapon during an alleged robbery in Cuautla, a city in Morelos state, near Mexico City.

The incident occurred Saturday night near a cultural center where a festival focused on medicinal plants was taking place. Authorities said Tacoronte had been staying at the venue overnight.

The Tlahuilli Institute, which organized the event, said she had attended with the intention of learning and participating in a community centered on knowledge, health and collective care.

Suspect arrested in investigation

On Thursday, Mexican security authorities announced the arrest of a man identified as Francisco Javier “N.” The Morelos Prosecutor’s Office said prosecutors intend to charge him with femicide, a legal category concerning the intentional killing of a woman for reasons related to gender.

Authorities have not yet publicly established all the circumstances surrounding the killing, and details of the suspect’s legal representation and potential plea were not immediately available.

The case has drawn attention from officials and academic institutions in both Mexico and Spain.

UAEM called on prosecutors to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation using a gender perspective, while Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares also called for the circumstances surrounding Tacoronte’s death to be fully investigated.

A community mourns

News of Tacoronte’s death sparked demonstrations against gender-based violence in Morelos.

At UAEM in Cuernavaca, fellow students gathered at a memorial with flowers and candles to honor the young woman.

Pamela Martínez, one of her classmates, said students were experiencing a difficult period and expressed solidarity with Tacoronte’s family and friends.

Her aerial dance instructor also remembered her as a cheerful and dedicated young woman who approached activities with enthusiasm.

The University of Granada strongly condemned the killing and expressed condolences to Tacoronte’s family, friends and classmates. The university also held a minute of silence in her memory.

Tacoronte’s sister, Lara, publicly expressed her grief and anger over her sister’s death, highlighting concerns about violence against women.

Femicide investigation

The case is being investigated under Mexico’s femicide framework. The World Health Organization defines femicide as the gender-related killing of women.

According to Paulina García-Del Moral, an associate professor at Canada’s University of Guelph, investigations involving possible femicide generally require authorities to consider gender-related factors, the circumstances surrounding violence against women and the relationship between the victim and alleged perpetrator.

Morelos has faced significant levels of violence against women. According to Mexico’s Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, the state recorded 21 femicide victims between January and July 2026.

Spanish and Mexican authorities coordinate

Mexican and Spanish officials have been working together following Tacoronte’s death.

Morelos Attorney General Fernando Blumenkron Escobar met with representatives of the Spanish Consulate in Mexico to discuss the investigation and efforts to support Tacoronte’s family.

The governor of Morelos also met with Spanish Consul Marcos Rodríguez Cantero.

Spanish diplomatic officials said they were receiving cooperation from state authorities and hoped the investigation would progress.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico’s Foreign Ministry was communicating with the Spanish Consulate and that the country’s security authorities were cooperating with the Morelos Attorney General’s Office.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish exactly what happened and determine the legal responsibility of the arrested suspect.
