12-Year-Old Xavier Taylor Remains in Coma as Communities Unite in Prayer

What began as an ordinary baseball warmup has become a months-long fight for 12-year-old Xavier Taylor—and a story that has brought communities far beyond New Jersey together in prayer.

On May 26, Xavier was warming up on a baseball field in New Jersey when a pitch struck him in the neck. He collapsed on the field, and his heart stopped.

More than three months later, Xavier remains alive but in a coma, continuing to receive care in the same hospital where he has spent much of this difficult journey.

While Xavier remains in his hospital room, an extraordinary show of support has grown around him.

Baseball teams across state lines have honored the young player by wearing his number, 6, during their games. Families who have never met Xavier have placed bats outside their homes, while communities have organized vigils and fundraising efforts in support of the Taylor family.

The movement has become known as “Xavier Strong.” What started with one family’s devastating experience has grown into a wider effort involving youth sports organizations, churches and communities throughout New Jersey and beyond.

Now, supporters are preparing for another moment of solidarity.

On Saturday, September 19, from 5 to 7 p.m., people are expected to gather at Karcher Field at the Woodlawn Sports Center in Maple Shade, New Jersey, for a Night of Prayer and Praise dedicated to Xavier and other families facing serious medical challenges.

Organizers are also asking churches and ministries outside New Jersey—and around the world—to join the effort remotely. The goal is for people to pause together at 5 p.m. Eastern Time, creating what organizers describe as a map “lit up with prayer.”

The focus is not only on Xavier.

Supporters are being asked to pray for his healing, for strength for his parents, for the doctors and medical professionals caring for him, and for other children and families facing their own desperate battles.

For Xavier’s family, the response has grown far beyond anything they expected.

“It’s bigger than any of us imagined,” a family member said of the outpouring of support.

A single moment during a baseball warmup changed Xavier’s life in May. Three months later, his struggle has become a reason for thousands of people to stand together.

As the September prayer event approaches, those supporting Xavier are continuing to hope, believe and pray for a breakthrough.
