Powerful Nor’easter Batters U.S. Northeast, Bringing Flooding and Power Outages

A powerful nor’easter is battering the northeastern United States with heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding, disrupting travel and leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity.

The storm has affected communities from the Mid-Atlantic to New England, with dangerous conditions reported along parts of the New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts coasts.

Flooding Hits Coastal Communities

Heavy rain and high tides have caused flooding in several coastal communities. In New Jersey, water covered streets and entered some homes, while residents in parts of New York also dealt with flooded roads.

Some residents were forced to move through flooded areas by boat, while emergency crews prepared for additional flooding as another high tide approached.

Authorities warned people to stay away from flooded roads and coastal waters because of strong currents, large waves and rapidly changing conditions.

More Than 100,000 Customers Lost Power

At one point on Saturday, more than 100,000 homes and businesses across the Northeast were without electricity. Thousands of utility workers were deployed to repair damaged power lines and remove fallen trees.

Reuters reported that more than 88,000 customers remained without power across New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania as of Saturday afternoon, although crews had already restored electricity to tens of thousands of affected customers.

Flights and Events Disrupted

The storm also caused major travel disruptions. About 425 flights involving airports in the affected region were canceled on Saturday, while more than 1,300 were delayed, according to FlightAware data cited by Reuters.

Several concerts and sporting events were also canceled or rescheduled because of the dangerous weather.

One Person Killed by Falling Tree

In Brooklyn, a 56-year-old man was killed after being struck by a falling tree during the storm. The New York City Housing Authority confirmed that the man was one of its employees.

Emergency crews across the region have continued responding to fallen trees, flooding and other storm-related incidents.

Storm Expected to Continue

Forecasters said the nor’easter could continue affecting the Northeast through Monday, with strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding remaining possible.

The National Weather Service warned that repeated high tides could worsen flooding in low-lying coastal areas, while strong winds could bring down additional trees and power lines.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to remain cautious as the storm continues to move along the coast.
