81-Year-Old Navy Veteran Killed by Stray Bullet While Leaving Walmart on Mobility Scooter

An 81-year-old grandfather was killed by a stray bullet while simply trying to return to his vehicle after shopping at Walmart in Georgia. The tragic incident has left his family devastated and raised concerns about the danger innocent bystanders can face when violence erupts in public places.

James Edward McDaniel, of Lula, Georgia, was leaving a Walmart store in Gainesville on October 14, 2026, riding his mobility scooter toward his vehicle when gunfire broke out in the parking lot.

According to police, a confrontation between two groups of young men escalated into a shooting. McDaniel was on the opposite side of the parking lot and was not involved in the dispute when he was struck by a bullet. He later died from his injuries.

McDaniel had served in the U.S. Navy after turning 18 and continued his military service in the Navy Reserve. Afterward, he worked for the postal service for 23 years before retiring. He was a husband, father of four, grandfather and great-grandfather.

His family remembered him as a loving man who treasured spending time with his loved ones. His wife, Gloria, with whom he shared a decades-long relationship, and their children are now struggling to cope with his sudden death.

Police arrested 18-year-old Kamari Nehemiah Tilmuth in connection with the shooting. He faces charges including felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. A second suspect, 17-year-old Erron Lamar Dorsey, was still being sought by authorities in reports published on October 20.

Investigators believe the shooting began with a dispute involving the two groups, but McDaniel had no known connection to the confrontation. Authorities continue to investigate the case.

For his family, the loss is especially painful because McDaniel was simply going about his everyday life when he became an innocent victim of gun violence.
