Ivy League-Educated Pediatrician Found Dead After House Fire as Husband Faces Murder Charges

A respected pediatrician in Pennsylvania was found dead after a fire at her family home, and investigators allege that her husband killed her before deliberately setting the house ablaze.

Julia Pederson, 41, lived in Harrisburg and had built a career caring for children and supporting families. She earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard University and her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. She had recently joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Community Pediatrics team.

Authorities said the fire occurred on October 10, 2026. Investigators later determined that Pederson’s death was not caused by the fire itself. Police allege that her husband, Jonathan Gatto, 41, strangled her before intentionally setting the home on fire.

Reports indicate that the couple’s seven-year-old daughter was asleep upstairs when the incident occurred. The child was not reported to have suffered physical injuries.

Gatto was arrested four days after the fire and charged with murder, arson and other offenses, according to reports. He was being held without bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 28.

Pederson’s death has left colleagues and members of the community mourning a doctor remembered for her dedication to children and families. Her employer expressed deep sadness over the loss and offered condolences to her loved ones.

The allegations against Gatto remain subject to the legal process.
