He Promised His Girlfriend a Trip to Las Vegas — Then Her Body Was Found in the Nevada Desert

Jaime Rae Feden thought she was traveling to Las Vegas with a man she had known for years. Instead, the trip ended in a remote Nevada desert, where she was killed. Months later, investigators uncovered a disturbing trail of evidence that led to John Matthew Chapman, the man who had accompanied her.
Feden, 33, was last seen by loved ones in September 2019. Chapman allegedly persuaded her to travel across the country under the pretense of a vacation and a possible photo shoot. According to investigators, he had already been considering killing her before they left Pennsylvania.
A Disappearance That Raised Alarms
After the trip, Chapman returned to Pennsylvania without Feden. Her friends and relatives became concerned when they could no longer reach her and she seemed to have disappeared from her usual life.
Authorities later discovered that Chapman had allegedly been using Feden’s phone and social media accounts to make it appear that she was still communicating with people. But those who knew her began noticing inconsistencies in the messages.
A welfare check at her home raised further suspicions. Investigators found items including duct tape and plastic zip ties, while information gathered during the investigation helped authorities piece together what had happened during the trip.
Her Body Was Found in the Desert
On October 5, 2019, a passerby discovered the body of a woman in a remote area of Lincoln County, Nevada, north of Las Vegas. The remains were later identified as Feden’s through dental records.
According to the criminal complaint, Chapman told investigators that he had taken Feden into the desert under the pretense of a bondage-themed photo shoot. He bound her hands and feet with zip ties, attached her to a signpost and covered her mouth and nose with duct tape, causing her to suffocate.
Investigators also examined internet searches connected to Chapman that indicated he had been thinking about murder and how to dispose of a body before the trip.
The case shocked Feden’s loved ones, who were left trying to understand how a journey that appeared to be an ordinary road trip could end in such violence.
Chapman Was Convicted and Sentenced to Life

In May 2024, a federal jury found Chapman guilty of kidnapping resulting in death. Prosecutors presented evidence that he had deceived Feden into traveling with him and then killed her in Nevada.
On August 2, 2024, a federal judge sentenced Chapman to life imprisonment.
But the legal story did not end there. In August 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit vacated his conviction and ordered a new trial. The court found that the trial judge had improperly pressured the jury during deliberations, even though it upheld the finding that there was sufficient evidence for a jury to convict him.
The ruling did not declare Chapman innocent or establish that the allegations were false. Instead, it meant the conviction could not stand because of problems with the trial process, and the case was sent back for a new trial.
The decision marked a major development in a case that had appeared to conclude with a life sentence.
For Feden’s loved ones, the case remains a painful reminder of the questions that can remain even after a conviction. Her death led to a lengthy investigation and a life sentence that was later overturned on procedural grounds, leaving the next chapter of the legal proceedings still to come.
