Woman Who Battled 73 Skin Cancers Marries the Man She Met During Hospital Treatment

After facing 73 skin cancers, numerous medical procedures and life-changing facial surgeries, Hilária Mireski has reached a new milestone: marrying the man who stood by her through years of medical challenges.

The 60-year-old woman from Santa Catarina, Brazil, married 49-year-old Adão Pereira on October 10, 2026, during a community wedding ceremony at a church in Itaiópolis. Their relationship began approximately seven years earlier, when they crossed paths at a hospital in Curitiba.

A Chance Meeting During Hospital Visits

At the time they met, Hilária was undergoing treatment at Erasto Gaertner Hospital. Adão was there accompanying his father.

Their paths crossed during a difficult period in both their lives, and a friendship gradually developed into a romantic relationship. Adão began accompanying Hilária to hospital appointments, particularly when her two daughters were unable to go with her.

Over time, their connection grew into a partnership that continued through medical appointments, procedures and the uncertainty of living with a rare genetic condition.

Their recent wedding marked a new chapter in a relationship built over years of companionship and mutual support.

A Rare Condition Behind Decades of Skin Cancer

Hilária lives with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also known as nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. This rare genetic disorder increases the risk of developing certain tumors, particularly basal cell carcinomas, a common type of skin cancer.

Her medical journey began in 1998, after she noticed spots and lesions appearing on her body. At the time, she was working as a street cleaner in Itaiópolis, a job she held for approximately a decade.

Over nearly three decades, she has faced 73 skin cancer diagnoses and undergone more than 90 biopsies, alongside numerous treatments and procedures.

In 2019, treatment resulted in the loss of one eye and part of her nose, leaving her with significant facial changes. Because of her condition, she requires ongoing medical monitoring, as new lesions can continue to develop.

Facing Cruel Comments While Sharing Her Story

Alongside the physical challenges, Hilária has also experienced hurtful comments about her appearance, including offensive remarks during social media livestreams.

Despite the criticism, she has continued sharing aspects of her life and medical journey, helping bring attention to her rare condition and the stigma people can face after visible changes caused by illness.

In July 2026, a fundraising campaign organized by influencer Willian da Bondade reportedly raised more than 570,000 Brazilian reais to help with expenses related to her treatment.

Her story has also drawn attention to the possibility of facial reconstruction. A surgeon, Raulino Brasil, has reportedly offered to assess her case through a social initiative supporting reconstructive procedures. Any treatment would depend on medical evaluation and planning.

A New Chapter After Years of Uncertainty

Before meeting Adão, Hilária had left a marriage marked by violence and alcoholism and raised her two daughters on her own.

Her meeting with Adão during hospital visits eventually led to a relationship that endured through years of treatment and personal challenges.

Their wedding does not erase the difficulties Hilária continues to face, but it marks an important moment in a life shaped by perseverance, family and companionship.

After years of confronting repeated diagnoses and demanding medical procedures, she and Adão have begun their married life together.
