A 24-year-old Texas man was arrested in May 2023 in connection with the death of Madeline Molina Pantoja, a 20-year-old woman whose disappearance prompted an extensive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Mario Juan Chacon Jr. was taken into custody on May 20, 2023, and charged with murder, according to the Midland Police Department. Pantoja’s remains had been discovered earlier that day, bringing a tragic end to the search for the young woman.
A Disappearance That Triggered an Extensive Search
Pantoja was last seen alive at approximately 11 p.m. on May 10, 2023, at an address on West Francis Avenue in Midland, Texas.
After she was reported missing the following day, police launched an investigation and organized an extensive search. Authorities worked around the clock to locate her, with assistance from the FBI, Texas Rangers, the Department of Homeland Security and the Midland County Sheriff’s Office.
The search continued for more than a week as investigators followed leads in an effort to determine what had happened to her.
Remains Discovered Outside Midland

On May 20, investigators found Pantoja’s remains approximately three miles east of County Road 190 and County Road 1160 in Midland County.
Authorities arranged for an autopsy to help determine the cause and circumstances of her death. The discovery became a central development in the investigation and preceded the announcement of Chacon’s arrest.
Police did not immediately release all the details surrounding the circumstances of her death.
Suspect Charged With Murder
According to the Midland Police Department, Chacon was arrested on the afternoon of May 20 and charged with murder in connection with Pantoja’s death.
The arrest followed the investigation into her disappearance and the discovery of her remains. Authorities continued working to establish the circumstances surrounding the case.
The charge was an allegation, and Chacon was entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.
Pantoja’s case highlighted the extensive efforts law enforcement agencies can undertake when a person disappears under suspicious circumstances. Her family and community were left seeking answers as investigators worked to establish what led to her death.
