Florida Woman, 36, Plunges Nearly 1,000 Feet to Her Death While Taking Photo in Italy’s Dolomites

A family vacation in the Italian Alps ended in tragedy when a 36-year-old Florida woman fell hundreds of feet from a mountainside while attempting to capture a photograph of the breathtaking scenery.

Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, who was from Miami, died on October 17, 2026, while hiking with relatives in the Dolomites of northern Italy. The accident occurred near Forcella Pordoi, a high-altitude mountain pass known for its dramatic cliffs and sweeping views.

According to reports citing local authorities and rescue workers, Rubio Leiva and her sister had moved away from the established trail toward an exposed viewpoint to take a picture. She reportedly lost her footing and plunged down the steep mountainside. The estimated distance of the fall varies among reports, with some placing it at approximately 1,000 feet.

Her sister alerted emergency services, prompting a mountain rescue team and helicopter to respond. Rescuers reached the area and medical personnel attempted to assist Rubio Leiva, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The recovery operation took several hours because of the difficult terrain. Her relatives were airlifted to the nearby town of Canazei, while rescuers recovered her body from the mountainside.

Rubio Leiva was born in Guatemala and graduated from Brigham Young University in 2012. She built a career in communications, marketing, consulting and business development, with professional connections to Miami. Reports also described her involvement in volunteer initiatives supporting young people and underserved communities.

The Dolomites attract visitors from around the world for their distinctive rock formations and panoramic mountain views. However, sections of the terrain feature steep drops, loose gravel and exposed slopes that can make leaving designated paths particularly dangerous.

Rubio Leiva’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a scenic excursion can turn fatal. Her family was left to cope with the loss of a loved one during what had been intended as a trip together.
