Police Officer Reunites With Man He Saved From Drowning Five Years Ago

A Suffolk County police officer in New York has reunited with the man whose life he helped save five years ago — and discovered that the rescue had inspired the survivor to join the same police department.

Officer Brian Christopher was reunited this week with Vivek Panneerselvam at the Suffolk County Police Department’s Sixth Precinct in Selden, New York. The meeting came more than five years after Christopher responded to an emergency at Panneerselvam’s family home.

The original incident happened on July 24, 2021, in Mount Sinai. Christopher was on patrol when a 911 call reported that a man was at the bottom of a backyard swimming pool. Because he was nearby, he was the first officer to arrive.

Christopher immediately ran into the backyard and jumped into the pool. He found Panneerselvam unresponsive underwater and pulled him out with help from members of his family.

Once out of the water, Christopher began performing CPR while waiting for paramedics to take over. Panneerselvam had been underwater for nearly five minutes.

Panneerselvam eventually made a complete recovery. He continued serving in the Army Reserve, but the experience also changed the direction of his life.

Inspired by the officer who had helped save him, Panneerselvam later became a Suffolk County Police Auxiliary Officer himself. The man Christopher had once rushed to rescue was now serving alongside members of the department.

Christopher was also presented with a Suffolk County Police Lifesaving Award recognizing his actions during the 2021 emergency.

During their reunion, Panneerselvam told Christopher that he would always be his hero and a hero to his family.

For Christopher, seeing Panneerselvam healthy years later was especially meaningful. He said he was grateful to know that the man he had found at the bottom of the pool had not only survived but had gone on to continue serving in the Army Reserve and become part of the police department’s auxiliary force.

Five years after a life-threatening emergency brought them together, the two men now share another connection — this time as members of the same law-enforcement community.
