Mom Creates a Little Magic for Her Baby Girl Who Has Spent Four Months in the NICU

While many parents imagine bringing their newborn home and celebrating their first milestones together, Ashley Navarro has found a different way to make those moments special for her daughter, Luna, who has spent four months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The 24-year-old mother, whose daughter is receiving care at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Florida, says Luna arrived months before her due date. Her premature birth meant that her lungs and other parts of her body needed additional time to develop.

Despite the challenges, Navarro has been determined to make sure her daughter experiences more than hospital routines and medical equipment. She regularly dresses Luna in themed outfits, creates custom costumes and celebrates her monthly milestones with decorations and photographs.

Because Luna is so small and the hospital environment limits what she can wear and do, Navarro often makes outfits specifically for her. She hopes the photographs will allow her daughter to look back on this period and see that her mother made an effort to give her a childhood filled with celebration, even while she was receiving intensive care.

For Navarro, the tradition is also a source of comfort. She told PEOPLE that creating costumes and decorating Luna’s space helps distract her from the uncertainty of having a baby in the hospital. Making the room feel beautiful, she explained, can temporarily make it easier to focus on the happy moments rather than the difficult circumstances.

The hospital has also helped families celebrate Halloween, giving some of its youngest patients opportunities to wear costumes and take photographs safely while receiving care.

Navarro’s story highlights the emotional reality faced by many NICU families: the joy of welcoming a child can exist alongside fear, uncertainty and a long wait to bring a baby home. Through small celebrations and handmade outfits, she is finding ways to make memories with Luna while hoping for the day their family life can continue beyond the hospital walls.
