Father of Two Drowns After Swimming Out to Rescue Seagull Tangled in Fishing Line

A Florida father of two has died after entering the Gulf of Mexico to rescue a seagull caught in his fishing line, leaving his wife and two young daughters facing an unimaginable loss.

William “Stone” Romberg, 31, was fishing near Carillon Beach in Laguna Beach, Florida, when he noticed the bird tangled in his line, according to reports from family and friends.

Rather than leave the struggling animal behind, Romberg swam out into the water to try to free it. But the rescue attempt quickly turned tragic when the bird and fishing hook became caught on his hand.

As he tried to swim back toward shore, a strong current reportedly carried him farther out into the Gulf. Romberg drowned, despite his attempt to return to safety.

His death has devastated his family and the local beach community, where he was known for his kindness and willingness to help others. Romberg worked as a beach service manager at Carillon Beach and was remembered by colleagues as a devoted family man with a warm personality.

He leaves behind his wife, Taylor, and their two young daughters, Hadley, 3, and Lainey, 1.

Romberg also grew up in the Atlanta area, where his father, Gerry Romberg, has been involved in high school football coaching. Friends and former classmates have shared tributes honoring Stone’s life and the impact he had on people around him.

A fundraising campaign was established to help his family with medical and funeral expenses as they navigate the sudden loss.

His death is also a sobering reminder of how quickly conditions in the ocean can become dangerous. Even a brief attempt to help an animal in distress can put a person at risk when currents are strong.

For Romberg’s loved ones, he will be remembered not only as a husband and father, but as someone whose instinct was to help a creature in trouble.
