The Wife He Lost

PART 2 — THE SECRET MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND

The next morning, I stood outside a private office in downtown Chicago, clutching my father’s letter.

A silver-haired man opened the door before I could knock twice.

“Claire Bennett?” he asked gently. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“My father told me to find you. Who are you?”

“My name is Robert Hayes. I was your father’s attorney and closest friend for thirty years.”

He led me into his office and placed the photograph from the envelope on his desk.

The older man standing beside my father was Robert himself.

“Your father wasn’t simply an investor,” he explained. “He was the original founder of Bennett Holdings. Years ago, he stepped away from public life to raise you without exposing you to the dangers that came with his wealth.”

I stared at the documents.

“How much did he leave me?”

Robert gave me a solemn look.

“Approximately four billion dollars in assets, including controlling shares in several private companies.”

My knees nearly gave way.

Four billion dollars.

And I had spent the last two years allowing my husband to make me feel worthless because I couldn’t pay my father’s medical bills.

“Why didn’t Dad tell me?”

“Because he wanted you to find someone who loved you for yourself. He feared that money would attract people who wanted to use you.”

I thought of Ethan’s cruel laughter when I had asked for a divorce.

Perhaps my father had understood something I had been too blind to see.

Robert slid another document across the desk.

“There is one more thing. Bennett Holdings has been quietly purchasing shares in several companies connected to your husband’s business empire.”

I looked up sharply.

“Ethan’s companies?”

“Some of them. Your father began investigating their financial structures several months ago.”

My heart tightened.

“Why?”

Robert hesitated before answering.

“Because he suspected someone was using Blackwood Shipping to move money through shell companies. He wanted to know whether you were in danger.”

Before I could ask another question, Robert’s assistant entered with a tablet.

“Mr. Hayes, Mr. Ethan Blackwood is here. He says it’s urgent.”

I went completely still.

Robert looked at me. “Would you like me to send him away?”

For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel afraid of my husband’s anger.

“No,” I replied. “Let him in.”

The door opened moments later.

Ethan strode into the office in a tailored black suit, his expression furious. Vanessa followed closely behind him, wearing a cream-colored designer dress and carrying a handbag worth more than most people’s monthly salaries.

His eyes immediately landed on me.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

He looked at my modest clothes, then at the legal documents on the desk.

“So this is where you’ve been hiding.”

Vanessa gave me a mocking smile.

“Honestly, Claire, you could have just asked Ethan for more money instead of creating all this drama.”

I slowly turned toward her.

“I didn’t ask him for money. I asked him for a divorce.”

Ethan slammed a folder onto Robert’s desk.

“You’re not getting one.”

Robert adjusted his glasses. “Mr. Blackwood, your wife has already initiated legal proceedings.”

“She’s my wife,” Ethan snapped. “And she has obligations to me.”

“Not obligations that entitle you to control her.”

Ethan ignored him and stepped toward me.

“Your father’s debts are still connected to my accounts. You walk away from me, and everything I’ve paid for will become your problem.”

For a moment, I simply studied his face.

Then I opened my handbag and took out a copy of the settlement statement.

“My father’s hospital bills were settled before his death. There is nothing left for you to threaten me with.”

His expression changed.

“You settled them with what money?”

“That’s no longer your concern.”

I turned to Robert.

“Please explain the inheritance.”

Robert nodded and opened the file containing the official documents.

“Mrs. Blackwood is the sole beneficiary and controlling shareholder of Bennett Holdings.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Bennett Holdings?”

“Yes,” Robert answered calmly. “The company currently holds substantial investments in several industries, including shipping, hospitality, and private security.”

For the first time since I’d known him, Ethan looked genuinely speechless.

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

I stood, picked up my father’s photograph, and faced the man I had once begged to love me.

“You told me I couldn’t survive without you, Ethan.”

I walked toward the door.

“Now you’ll have to learn how to survive without me.”

His voice followed me into the corridor.

“Claire! You can’t just walk away!”

I didn’t turn around.

But as the elevator doors closed, I heard him ask Robert a question that made my blood run cold.

“Tell me exactly what Bennett Holdings knows about my shipping companies.”

My father’s warning echoed in my mind.

Before you trust anyone again, meet the man in the photograph.

Perhaps my father hadn’t simply left me a fortune.

Perhaps he had left me the truth.

And I was determined to uncover every part of it.
