THE FAMILY I CHOSE PART 3 — THE NAMES THEY NEVER EXPECTED

THE FAMILY I CHOSE
PART 3 — THE NAMES THEY NEVER EXPECTED
The wedding day arrived beneath a beautiful spring sky.
The ballroom was filled with white roses, golden lights, and nearly two hundred guests.
I stood near the entrance in my wedding dress, holding Richard’s arm.
He looked down at me.
“Ready, sweetheart?”
I smiled through my tears.
“More than ready, Dad.”
His eyes became watery.
Across the ballroom, I noticed three familiar faces.
Gerald.
Patricia.
And Victoria.
I hadn’t invited them personally.
Apparently, my mother had heard about the wedding through a distant relative and decided they were entitled to attend.
She was wearing an elegant champagne-colored dress. Victoria wore something even more expensive.
They looked perfectly comfortable.
My mother approached me before the ceremony.
“Well, Tory,” she said, glancing at my dress. “You certainly went all out.”
“Thank you for coming.”
She looked toward Richard.
“So, you’re the people who have been helping her.”
Richard smiled politely.
“We’re her family.”
My mother’s smile tightened.
“Yes, well. We’re her parents.”
I didn’t argue.
The ceremony was beautiful.

Richard walked me down the aisle, Marcus cried when he saw me, and Eleanor wiped her eyes throughout the vows.
When the ceremony ended, the guests moved into the ballroom for the reception.
I was laughing with Marcus when the emcee stepped onto the stage and tapped his microphone twice.
“Ladies and gentlemen, before we begin the speeches, we have a special announcement.”
The room gradually fell silent.
My mother straightened in her chair.
She seemed to assume she was about to receive some kind of public acknowledgment as the bride’s mother.
The emcee smiled.
“Tonight, we would like to recognize the two wonderful people who officially welcomed our bride into their family.”
My mother’s smile widened.
Then he continued.
“Please give a warm round of applause to Richard and Eleanor Morrison, the proud parents of our beautiful bride, Tory Morrison!”
The ballroom erupted in applause.
Richard stood, visibly emotional.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
I walked toward them and hugged them both.
But across the room, my biological mother had gone completely still.
My father leaned toward her.
“What did he just say?”
Victoria stared at me.
My mother finally stood.
“Excuse me,” she called loudly. “There must be some mistake.”
The music stopped.
Everyone turned.
She pointed toward Richard and Eleanor.
“We are Tory’s parents!”
The emcee glanced at me uncertainly.
I took the microphone from his hand.
“No, Mom,” I said calmly. “You are the people who gave birth to me. But Richard and Eleanor are the people who chose me.”
My mother’s face turned pale.
“What are you talking about?”
I looked directly at her.
“I’m talking about the legal adoption you never bothered to know about.”
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
My father pushed back his chair.
“You changed your name without telling us?”
“Yes.”
“And you thought this was appropriate? Announcing it at your wedding?”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Funny. You didn’t think it was inappropriate when you told me not to come home for Thanksgiving.”
Nobody spoke.
I placed the microphone back on its stand and returned to Marcus.
But before I could take his hand, my mother said something that made the entire room turn silent.
“Tory, if you walk away from us tonight, don’t expect us to treat you like family ever again.”
I stopped.
Then I smiled sadly.
“Mom, that’s the first thing you’ve said tonight that I completely agree with.”
I took Marcus’s hand.
And as the music began again, my biological family finally understood something they had never considered.
I hadn’t lost my family.
I had finally found one.
