The Secret He Overheard

PART 3 — THE DELIVERY ROOM SECRET

At thirty-six weeks and five days, Claire woke up with severe abdominal pain.

At first, she thought it was another false alarm.

Then she noticed the blood.

“Daniel!”

He rushed into the bedroom, still wearing his expensive black suit.

“What happened?”

“I think something’s wrong. We need to go to the hospital.”

Daniel immediately called his driver.

But instead of taking her to the hospital where Claire had arranged her maternity care, he gave the driver a different address.

“Take us to St. Catherine’s.”

Claire turned toward him.

“My doctor is at Northwestern.”

“St. Catherine’s has excellent facilities. I already arranged everything.”

“Daniel, I want my own doctor.”

He took her hand.

“Please don’t make this difficult. You’re in pain. Let me handle it.”

Claire recognized the same controlling tone she had heard outside his office.

She reached for her phone.

Daniel gently took it from her.

“You don’t need to worry about calls right now.”

Something inside Claire snapped.

“Give me my phone.”

He looked surprised.

“Claire—”

“I’m still the patient’s mother, Daniel. And I have the right to make decisions about my own medical care.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally, he handed it back.

At the hospital, Claire insisted on speaking privately with the attending physician. She explained her medical preferences and requested that no one receive information about her condition without her authorization.

The physician took her concerns seriously.

Within an hour, Rachel arrived.

She rushed to Claire’s bedside and squeezed her hand.

“Evelyn knows what’s happening. She’s already contacted the hospital’s legal department.”

Claire closed her eyes in relief.

Then Daniel entered with Vanessa.

Vanessa wore a cream-colored dress and carried a designer handbag.

“Claire,” she said sweetly. “You poor thing. Daniel told me you were having a difficult pregnancy.”

Claire looked at her.

“Why are you here?”

Vanessa smiled.

“I’m only trying to help.”

Rachel stood up.

“She didn’t ask for your help.”

Daniel frowned.

“Rachel, this is a family matter.”

“Then perhaps you should start behaving like family.”

Before Daniel could respond, a nurse entered.

“Mr. Whitmore, we need to speak with your wife privately.”

Daniel looked irritated.

“I’m her husband.”

“And she’s our patient,” the nurse replied calmly.

He had no choice but to leave.

An hour later, Claire was taken for an emergency delivery after doctors determined that the baby needed to be delivered promptly.

The procedure was frightening, but the medical team worked quickly.

At 6:32 p.m., a tiny cry filled the room.

“It’s a boy,” the doctor announced.

Claire began to cry.

Her son was alive.

Healthy enough to cry, to breathe, and to curl his tiny fingers around hers.

“Hello, sweetheart,” she whispered. “Mommy’s here.”

But the moment of happiness was interrupted when the hospital administrator entered.

“Mrs. Whitmore, there’s something we need to discuss.”

Claire looked up anxiously.

“What is it?”

The administrator held a folder.

“Your husband submitted a document requesting that he be granted exclusive authority over the newborn’s discharge and medical decisions.”

Claire stared at her.

“Did you approve it?”

“No. We reviewed the document and found several issues. We’ve referred it to our legal department.”

Rachel squeezed Claire’s hand.

Then Claire’s phone buzzed.

It was a message from Evelyn.

Don’t sign anything. I’ve just received a financial transfer record from Vanessa’s company.

Another message followed.

Your husband paid them $750,000. The payment description says: Maternal Incapacity Assessment and Custody Preparation.

Claire felt sick.

But the final message was worse.

Claire, the company has another client. Someone from Daniel’s family.

Before she could ask who, the hospital room door opened.

Ethan Whitmore stood there.

His face was pale, and he looked as though he hadn’t slept in days.

“Claire,” he said quietly. “I need to tell you the truth about my brother.”

She stared at him.

“What truth?”

Ethan glanced toward the hallway to make sure Daniel wasn’t nearby.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Daniel isn’t trying to take your baby because he wants to raise him.”

Claire’s heart began pounding.

“Then why?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Because your son is the heir to something Daniel has been trying to control for years. And if the baby is placed under his exclusive custody, Daniel will gain access to an inheritance your father left behind.”

Claire went completely still.

Her father.

The man who had died two years before her wedding anniversary.

Ethan placed a sealed envelope on the bedside table.

“Your father knew Daniel wasn’t trustworthy. He gave me this before he died and made me promise to deliver it when you needed it.”

Claire slowly reached for the envelope.

On the front, in her father’s familiar handwriting, were six words:

Claire, if Daniel betrays you, read this.

And for the first time since overhearing her husband’s conversation, Claire began to cry.

Because whatever was inside that envelope could change everything.
