Rwandan Man Appears in UK Court Over Alleged 1994 Genocide Crimes

A Rwandan man accused of involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda appeared before a London court on Tuesday, becoming the first person to be charged in the United Kingdom with genocide-related offences connected to the mass killings.

Vincent Brown, formerly known as Vincent Bajinya, is accused of encouraging violence and ordering the murders of six people during the first week of the genocide, including a young mother and her baby, according to British prosecutors.

Allegations From 1994
The alleged crimes took place between April 6 and April 13, 1994, when violence rapidly spread across Rwanda.

Prosecutors allege that Brown used his position within Rwanda’s National Office of Population to help orchestrate violence through other people.

More than 800,000 people were killed during the genocide, in which members of Rwanda’s Tutsi minority and moderate Hutus were targeted.

The prosecution’s case includes testimony from people who lived near Brown at the time and who described him as a leader involved in the violence.

Brown Denies the Allegations
Brown, who has lived in the United Kingdom for more than two decades, denies the accusations.

His lawyer said Brown considers the charges an opportunity to clear his name. Brown maintains that he left Rwanda in mid-April 1994.

At Tuesday’s hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, a judge granted him bail. However, prosecutors said they intended to appeal the decision, meaning he would remain in custody for the time being.

UK Investigation Continues
British authorities are continuing to investigate other people suspected of involvement in genocide-related offences.

Six additional individuals are being investigated in connection with similar allegations, according to Reuters.

The case against Brown is expected to develop through further court proceedings as prosecutors present evidence concerning events that occurred more than three decades ago.

The charges are allegations, and Brown has not been convicted of any offence.
