A successful California attorney was found dead on Mount Whitney after failing to return from a mountain excursion, triggering a search that ended in tragedy nearly a week later.
Winston Chu, 49, from Santa Clara, was identified by authorities as the climber whose body was recovered from the mountain in California’s Sierra Nevada range.
The alarm was raised on October 19, 2026, after staff at a motel in Lone Pine noticed that Chu had failed to check out as scheduled. He had also left personal belongings behind. Employees told authorities that he had planned to hike in the Mount Whitney area.
Deputies launched an investigation and later located his vehicle at Whitney Portal, a popular starting point for people attempting to climb the mountain.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted Chu along the Mountaineer’s Route on October 20. However, rescuers were unable to reach him immediately because a storm brought snow and dangerous weather conditions to the area.
The recovery operation was finally completed on October 25, when a CHP helicopter and members of the Inyo County Search and Rescue team reached the location and retrieved his body from an elevation of approximately 13,600 feet.
The Inyo County Coroner’s Office subsequently determined that Chu died from multiple traumatic injuries caused by a fall. Authorities have not publicly explained exactly how the fall occurred.
Chu had built a successful career in the legal profession. He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 2006 and worked for more than eight years as a patent attorney at Roche Molecular Solutions in Santa Clara. His previous professional experience also included work at law firms.
Mount Whitney rises to 14,505 feet, making it the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. Although it attracts climbers from across the country, its altitude, steep terrain and rapidly changing weather can make reaching the summit extremely dangerous.
Chu had planned to take the Mountaineer’s Route, a steep and technically demanding approach to the summit. Unlike the mountain’s more frequently used main trail, this route involves challenging terrain, loose rocks and exposed sections that require considerable climbing experience.

His death comes amid a series of fatal incidents on Mount Whitney in recent years, highlighting the dangers climbers can face even when they have experience and preparation.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Chu’s next of kin had been notified and extended its condolences to his family and friends.
