The Stolen Emeralds

PART 2 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE EMERALDS

Celeste’s voice was barely audible beneath the noise of the photographers.

“Claire, the investigators found an old transfer agreement. Your husband didn’t just steal money from your joint company. He used your mother’s inheritance as collateral for a series of secret loans.”

I froze.

“What?”

Celeste glanced toward Adrian.

“Your mother’s emerald collection was supposed to remain in a private trust. But three years ago, several pieces were transferred to a company registered under Vanessa Hart’s name.”

I stared at the necklace around Vanessa’s throat.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

“How much?” I whispered.

Celeste hesitated.

“Nearly eighteen million dollars.”

My stomach tightened.

My mother had spent her entire life collecting rare emeralds. Before she died, she established a trust to protect them for me and my future children.

Adrian had always told me the collection was safely stored in a private vault.

He had lied.

I turned toward him.

“Did you use my mother’s inheritance to fund your mistress’s lifestyle?”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Lower your voice.”

“Answer me.”

He stepped closer, his voice dropping.

“You don’t understand how complicated business can be. I was protecting our assets.”

“By transferring my mother’s jewelry to Vanessa?”

Vanessa immediately stood.

“Don’t drag me into this! Adrian told me those emeralds were a gift from his family.”

I looked at her.

“Then why did you tell everyone he gave you the necklace?”

Her lips parted, but no answer came.

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“Vanessa, stop talking.”

That small gesture told me more than any confession could.

Celeste motioned to two security officers.

“Please ask the young lady to return the necklace. It is registered as part of the Vale family estate.”

Vanessa clutched the pendant.

“Adrian, tell them!”

He looked at me instead.

“Claire, let’s leave. We can settle this privately.”

I laughed softly.

“Privately? You had no problem humiliating me in front of hundreds of people.”

Then I reached into my handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a copy of the original trust agreement, signed by my mother and witnessed by three attorneys.

I handed it to Celeste.

“Would you please read the final paragraph?”

Celeste unfolded the document.

Her eyes moved across the page before she looked up.

“Any unauthorized transfer, sale, or use of the collection shall constitute a breach of trust, and all beneficiaries retain the right to demand immediate recovery and pursue criminal proceedings.”

Adrian went pale.

“That’s an outdated document.”

“No,” I replied. “It’s the original. And it’s still legally binding.”

His phone rang again.

This time, he answered.

“What do you mean the bank has frozen the collateral?”

He listened.

Then his face became expressionless.

I watched him carefully.

The man who had once controlled every room he entered was suddenly struggling to stand.

When he ended the call, he looked at me with something dangerously close to fear.

“Claire, you need to stop this.”

I shook my head.

“I tried to stop you three years ago. I just didn’t know what you were doing.”

Then I walked toward the runway entrance.

The fashion show was about to begin.

And tonight, the emerald collection would be presented to the world.

But before I could take another step, Celeste caught my wrist.

“There’s one more thing.”

I turned.

She lowered her voice.

“The necklace Vanessa is wearing isn’t the only missing piece. Your mother’s original emerald crown disappeared six months before her death.”

My heart stopped.

“What crown?”

Celeste looked toward Adrian.

“Ask your husband. He was the last person recorded entering your mother’s private vault.”

For eleven years, I had believed Adrian was simply an unfaithful husband.

Now I was beginning to understand that I had married a man capable of stealing from a dying woman’s legacy.

And I wasn’t going to let him walk away.
