Luigi Mangione’s Republican Cousin Wins Narrow Baltimore Election After Campaigning on Tougher Crime Policies

The cousin of Luigi Mangione, the man who admitted shooting UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, has secured a closely contested election victory in Maryland, putting his family name back in the headlines for an entirely different reason.

Nino Mangione, a Republican candidate, led the race for Baltimore County Council’s District 5 seat following the November 3, 2026, election. Unofficial results showed him receiving 48.72 percent of the vote, compared with 45.16 percent for his Democratic challenger, Shawn McIntosh. Unaffiliated candidate Cory Shaffer received 6.04 percent.

The difference between the two leading candidates was 1,228 votes, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections’ reported figures. All 40 election-day precincts had reported, although the results were still unofficial and the counting process had not been fully completed.

Nino’s campaign focused heavily on public safety and crime. He highlighted concerns about murders, shootings, carjackings and robberies in Baltimore County, calling for stronger action to protect residents and supporting law enforcement.

The victory marks another step in a political career that has already included several years in Maryland’s state legislature. Nino served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2019 until June 2026, when he left the position after being appointed to a vacant Baltimore County Council seat. He then ran to retain a council position through the November election.

His family connection has attracted considerable attention because his first cousin is Luigi Mangione, who was arrested in December 2024 in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.

Luigi pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges related to Thompson’s killing in August 2026 and admitted in court that he shot the executive. He continues to face a separate state murder prosecution in New York, which his lawyers are seeking to have dismissed.

Following Luigi’s arrest, Nino had publicly expressed the family’s shock and devastation over the allegations, while offering condolences to Thompson’s loved ones.

The election result has placed Nino Mangione in the spotlight as voters focus on his record and his promises on public safety. Despite the attention surrounding his cousin’s criminal case, Nino’s campaign centered on local concerns and his plans for Baltimore County.
