Mother and Daughter Found Dead After Going for a Short Walk Near Home as Investigators Suspect Grizzly Bear Attack

A mother and her 20-year-old daughter have been found dead after disappearing during what was believed to be an ordinary walk along a woodland trail in British Columbia, Canada.
Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, were reported missing by relatives on Sunday, November 1, after they failed to return from a walk near their home in Bella Coola.
The pair had reportedly gone out on Saturday afternoon, October 31, to walk along the Snooka West Trail, a route they were familiar with and located just a short distance from their home.
When the family could no longer reach them, relatives contacted police and requested a welfare check. Their vehicle was subsequently found near the trailhead, prompting a search involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, conservation officers and search-and-rescue personnel.
The search ended in tragedy.
Jennifer’s remains were discovered on Monday, November 2. Selah was found the following afternoon, approximately 150 metres away.
Investigators believe the deaths resulted from a suspected grizzly bear attack after finding evidence that an animal had been involved. However, authorities have not established exactly what happened or confirmed how many bears may have participated.
British Columbia Conservation Officer Service Inspector Jeff Tyre said investigators were considering the possibility that multiple bears were involved.
Officials are continuing efforts to locate the animal or animals believed to be responsible. Any bears captured will be assessed, and those confirmed to have participated in the fatal attack will be killed under provincial public-safety guidelines.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while the investigation continues. Additional safety measures have also been introduced in the community, including nighttime restrictions and patrols.
The tragedy has devastated the Balcarras family.
Jennifer had recently moved to Bella Coola to begin a new chapter in her career as an art therapist and school counsellor. She was also a mother of four and a grandmother.
Her family remembered her as a talented artist, an outdoors enthusiast and a strong woman who had lived in remote communities, including parts of Alaska.
Selah was described by relatives as a gentle, quiet young woman who loved art, ballet and hiking. She was studying online through Athabasca University and shared many of her mother’s interests.
The two were reportedly extremely close, with family members describing them as inseparable companions who often went hiking together.
The deaths have also shaken the small community of Bella Coola, where residents are familiar with living alongside large populations of grizzly bears.
The incident has brought renewed attention to another serious bear attack in the same region in November 2025, when a grizzly attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers during an outdoor field trip. Several people, including children, suffered serious injuries. The bear involved in that incident was never captured.
Authorities have not established whether the recent deaths and the earlier attack involved the same animal.

As investigators continue searching for answers, Jennifer and Selah’s family is left mourning two lives lost during what should have been a simple walk together.
