The Wedding Pearls Part 3 – The Woman Behind the Pearls

The Wedding Pearls
Part 3 – The Woman Behind the Pearls
At nine thirty the following morning, Clare Bennett entered the executive conference room.
Twelve board members were waiting.
Her father sat at the head of the table, but he stood when she entered.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Richard Bennett announced, “I’d like to introduce the new acting chairwoman of Bennett Maritime Holdings.”
Clare took her seat.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
She had been involved in the company’s operations for years, but she had deliberately stayed away from the spotlight while preparing for her marriage.
That was over now.
“Thank you, Dad.”
She opened the folder in front of her.
“I’ve reviewed our proposed partnership with Duca Shipping. I’ve also reviewed the financial exposure, the terminal agreements, and the outstanding obligations.”
One board member cleared his throat.
“Miss Bennett, withdrawing from this partnership could cost us several million dollars.”
“I know.”
“Then why proceed?”
Clare looked directly at him.
“Because the projected profits don’t justify giving another company influence over our shipping operations.”
She turned a page.
“Effective immediately, we’re exploring independent terminal expansion opportunities. Our legal team will also review every existing contract involving Duca Shipping.”
Her father smiled faintly.
That was the Clare he knew.
Not the woman who had spent three years waiting for a powerful man to make time for her.
But the woman who had helped build their family’s future.
The meeting continued for another forty minutes.

When it ended, Clare’s assistant approached.
“Miss Bennett, Mr. Matteo Duca is downstairs. He’s demanding to see you.”
Clare didn’t look surprised.
“Tell him I’m unavailable.”
“He says he won’t leave.”
“Then he can wait.”
Twenty minutes later, Matteo walked into the executive reception area.
He wore a charcoal suit, his dark hair perfectly arranged, and the familiar expression that had made people throughout Boston nervous.
“Clare.”
She continued signing a document.
“Mr. Duca.”
His jaw tightened.
“Can we speak privately?”
“You can speak here.”
He glanced at the employees watching from nearby desks.
“Don’t make this difficult.”
Clare finally raised her eyes.
“You seem to confuse my decisions with your inconvenience.”
Matteo stepped closer.
“I’m trying to save our relationship.”
“We don’t have one.”
“You’re angry. I understand that.”
“No, Matteo. You understand that your business deal is falling apart.”
His expression darkened.
“Is that what you think this is about?”
Clare closed the folder.
“Would you like to explain why you gave Natalia my bracelet?”
“I already told you. She needed help.”
“Then why did you tell her it was a gift specifically chosen for her?”
Matteo froze.
Clare reached into her desk drawer and removed a small printed photograph.
It showed Natalia wearing the pearls at an exclusive charity gala three weeks earlier.
The photograph had been published in a society magazine.
Beneath it was a caption:
Matteo Duca surprises longtime companion Natalia Russo with a family heirloom.
Matteo stared at the picture.
Clare’s voice remained calm.
“You told me those pearls were purchased for our wedding. You told Natalia they were a family heirloom.”
“I can explain that.”
“I’m sure you can.”
“Clare, listen—”
“No. You listen.”
She stood.
“For three years, I defended you. I made excuses when you canceled our plans. I accepted your mother’s insults. I ignored the rumors about Natalia because I believed you when you said I was the only woman you wanted.”
Her eyes glistened, but she refused to look away.
“Yesterday, you brought her into our wedding rehearsal wearing the bracelet you promised me. You gave her the seat beside your mother. And when I walked away, you were more worried about the business agreement than losing me.”
Matteo’s face changed.
For the first time, he seemed unable to find an answer.
Then he reached into his jacket.
“I brought something.”
He placed a velvet jewelry box on her desk.
Inside was a magnificent diamond bracelet.
“It’s worth twice as much as the pearls,” he said. “Take it. Let me make this right.”
Clare looked at the diamonds.
Then she closed the box and pushed it back toward him.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Then tell me what you want.”
“I wanted the man who gave me those pearls to mean what he said.”
Matteo’s expression softened.
“I did mean it.”
“No. You meant it when you wanted me to believe you.”
She walked toward the door.
“Our lawyers will contact yours. There will be no wedding, no merger, and no further personal discussions.”
Matteo grabbed her wrist.
“Clare, don’t walk away from me.”
She looked down at his hand.
He immediately released her.
“Don’t touch me again.”
For several seconds, they stood in silence.
Then Clare returned to her desk.
Matteo finally turned and walked away.
But he hadn’t reached the elevator when his phone rang.
It was his chief financial officer.
“Matteo, you need to come back immediately.”
“What now?”
“We’ve uncovered something in the Bennett negotiations.”
“Speak.”
“The proposed terminal acquisition wasn’t structured the way you thought. Clare’s company owns the controlling rights to three strategic shipping terminals we were planning to use.”
Matteo stopped walking.
“And?”
“And without Bennett Maritime’s approval, our expansion project is effectively frozen.”
His assistant appeared beside him, holding another document.
“Sir, there’s something else.”
Matteo took it.
It was a formal notice from Bennett Maritime’s legal department.
But the final page contained a handwritten note.
He recognized Clare’s handwriting immediately.
You once told me I would always have a place beside you.
You were wrong.
I have my own table now.
Matteo slowly lowered the paper.
Across the city, Clare stood in her office, looking at the bracelet photograph one last time before placing it inside a drawer.
Her assistant entered.
“Miss Bennett, the European shipping consortium has requested a meeting. They’re interested in discussing an independent partnership.”
Clare smiled.
“Schedule it for Monday.”
“And one more thing. Someone from the Duca family has been calling repeatedly.”
“Who?”
“Isabella Duca.”
Clare paused.
“Put her through.”
A moment later, her former future mother-in-law’s voice came through the speaker.
“Clare, darling. I think we should meet. There are things about Natalia that Matteo hasn’t told you.”
Clare slowly straightened.
“What things?”
Isabella hesitated.
“Those pearls weren’t the only thing he gave her.”
Clare’s smile disappeared.
“Then I think,” she said quietly, “we have a great deal to discuss.”
And for the first time since walking away from St. Catherine’s Cathedral, Clare realized that the wedding she had canceled might have been hiding a much bigger betrayal than she had ever imagined.
