French Bulldog Cassie Dies After Defending Her Owners From Black Bear Attack

A quiet early morning at a home in Northern California turned into a terrifying struggle when a black bear attacked a couple — and their beloved French Bulldog rushed in to protect them.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. on September 19, 2026, at the home of Jeff and Mallory Wilson in the Burnt Ranch area of Trinity County. Jeff was reportedly opening the door to let the couple’s French Bulldog, Cassie, outside when the bear suddenly attacked.

Jeff suffered serious injuries during the encounter, including multiple wounds and broken ribs. When Cassie saw the bear attacking her owner, the dog immediately charged toward the animal.

Mallory was awakened by the commotion and rushed to help her husband. She fought with the bear, but the animal then turned its attention toward her. Mallory suffered injuries to her head and face, along with wounds to her arms and other parts of her body.

Cassie was also badly injured during the attack. She suffered numerous wounds along her back and spine area. The Wilsons rushed their dog to an emergency veterinary hospital that night, hoping she could survive.

At first, Cassie was still able to walk and drink water, giving the family hope that she might recover from her injuries. Sadly, those hopes were short-lived.

Cassie died the following day at approximately 7½ years old.

For the Wilson family, the loss was especially heartbreaking after Cassie had rushed toward the bear during the attack. Her actions came as the couple was fighting to protect themselves from the animal.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) launched an investigation following the attack. Wildlife personnel from Weed, Redding, and Eureka were deployed to search for and attempt to trap the bear believed to be responsible.

As of the latest update on September 24, authorities had not yet captured the animal.

The search remains ongoing as wildlife officials work to locate the bear and assess the threat it may pose to people and pets in the area. Meanwhile, the Wilson family is mourning Cassie, the dog who intervened when her owners were in danger.
