Missouri Teacher Runs Into Burning Home to Rescue Elderly Neighbor

Washington, Missouri, United States — September 21, 2026

A Missouri high school teacher rushed into a burning home late at night and carried an elderly neighbor to safety after seeing flames coming from the building.

He Saw Flames From His Daughter’s Window

Clint Schneider, a social studies teacher at Washington High School, was at home on September 18 when he noticed flames coming from his neighbor’s house across the street.

Schneider knew the woman living on the first floor had limited mobility. He immediately ran toward the house because he feared she would not be able to escape on her own.

He did not stop to put on shoes or wait for firefighters to arrive.

Into the Smoke and Flames

Schneider used a rock to break a glass door and entered the house. Only after stepping inside did he realize he was barefoot and walking across broken glass.

Inside, the fire had already spread through the lower part of the home. Schneider described the living room as being filled with flames and thick smoke, making it difficult to see.

He began calling out for his neighbor. Through the glow of the fire, he eventually saw her hands waving toward him.

A Race to Get Her Outside

Schneider reached the woman and grabbed her arm. She grabbed his arm in return, but because she had difficulty moving, they could not get out quickly.

Schneider then lifted her and carried her outside in his arms.

By the time firefighters arrived, the woman was already safely outside the burning building.

Fire Officials Praise His Actions

Assistant Fire Chief Mark Skornia said the situation could have become deadly within minutes if Schneider had not reached the woman when he did.

The Washington Fire Department later thanked Schneider publicly for his actions and described him as a hometown hero.

Schneider, however, has played down the praise. He said he does not consider himself a hero and believes he was simply helping his neighbor.

A Community Steps In

The elderly woman survived the incident, although her home was badly damaged by the fire. Her name and age have not been publicly released.

An online fundraiser was established to help support the woman after the fire. Another resident who lived in an upstairs apartment was also affected, although she was not home when the fire began.

For Schneider, the incident began with a frightening sight from his daughter’s window and ended with his neighbor safely outside. His decision to act immediately gave firefighters time to arrive without having to search for a trapped resident.
