Baby Born at Just 26 Weeks Finally Goes Home After 138 Days in Hospital

Holguín, Cuba — September 25, 2026

A baby girl born extremely prematurely at just 26 weeks of pregnancy has finally gone home with her mother after spending 138 days receiving specialized care at a hospital in Holguín, Cuba.

The baby, Aurora, was born on May 9 weighing just 1,050 grams (2.3 pounds). She remained in the Neonatology Service at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University General Hospital for more than four months before doctors discharged her on September 25.

A Long Stay in Neonatal Care

Aurora was born at 26 weeks of gestation, placing her among extremely premature newborns who require intensive medical monitoring and specialized care.

According to the hospital, Aurora faced the challenges associated with extreme prematurity from her earliest days. Doctors, nurses and other medical staff cared for her throughout her prolonged hospitalization.

The hospital announced her discharge on social media, describing it as the beginning of a new stage for Aurora and her mother, Mirelis Linares Alonso.

Her Mother Stayed by Her Side

Mirelis accompanied her daughter through the long hospitalization. The hospital also recognized her perseverance during the 138 days Aurora spent in neonatal care.

After months of treatment and monitoring, mother and daughter were finally able to leave the hospital together.

Aurora’s Journey Has Inspired Other Families

The news of Aurora’s discharge prompted messages from other families who had experienced premature births at the same hospital.

One mother recalled giving birth to twins at 33 weeks at the hospital three decades ago. Another shared that her son had been born at 32 weeks and spent 43 days receiving care there.

Their stories reflected the experiences of families who have spent weeks or months waiting for their premature babies to become strong enough to go home.

A New Beginning at Home

After 138 days in neonatal care, Aurora’s discharge marks a new chapter for her and her mother.

The hospital staff said they were left with memories of the baby and satisfaction from having been part of her recovery. Aurora is now continuing her journey at home with her mother.
