Continuous heavy rain has flooded several parts of Bangkok, disrupting traffic and forcing some residents to evacuate as downpours continued from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Major canals in the Thai capital were overwhelmed after rainfall exceeded 20 centimeters (7.8 inches), officials said Saturday. Floodwaters spread across the city, particularly in central and eastern areas, blocking roads and bringing traffic to a standstill.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department warned that heavy rain would continue across much of the country through Sunday. Forecasters attributed the conditions to a strong low-pressure system over the central region combined with strengthening southwest monsoon conditions.

More than 84,000 people in 21 provinces across Thailand had been affected by flooding as of Saturday, with the central region among the hardest-hit areas. Authorities sent emergency warnings through the country’s cell-broadcast system to residents in affected areas.

Bangkok experienced heavy downpours throughout Friday, with intense rain continuing into Saturday. Photos and videos showed major roads submerged under floodwater, while some vehicles were abandoned after drivers were unable to navigate the rising water.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said heavy rain was expected to continue through Saturday but that floodwaters should begin to recede once the rain eased. City authorities were working to drain accumulated water as quickly as possible.

Several shelters were established to accommodate residents who were forced to leave their homes because of the flooding. Some government facilities were also opened to provide parking for vehicles affected by the inundated roads.

Authorities continued monitoring rainfall and flood conditions as Bangkok and other parts of Thailand faced further disruption from the ongoing severe weather.
