Ninth Woman’s Body Found as South Africa Probes Series of Killings

South African police have discovered the body of a ninth woman in the Johannesburg area, intensifying an investigation into a series of killings that has raised fears that a possible serial killer could be operating in the region.

The latest body was found Thursday in Dawn Park, in the Ekurhuleni municipality east of Johannesburg. Police have not confirmed that the nine deaths are connected, but investigators say similarities between several cases are concerning.

Ninth Body Discovered
The latest victim was found near a construction site in Dawn Park. Authorities said the woman appeared to be in her 30s.

Three of the bodies were discovered in the same area this week, while others were found at locations between roughly 16 and 22 miles away.

Police said all nine victims were women in their 20s or 30s, and several were found naked or partially clothed. Investigators are comparing evidence, timelines, locations and victim profiles to determine whether the cases are connected.

Police Investigate Possible Connections
Authorities have warned that it is too early to conclude that a serial killer is responsible.

Gauteng provincial police commissioner Fred Kekana said investigators are considering multiple possibilities, including separate perpetrators or more than one suspect.

Police have nevertheless described similarities between some of the killings as sufficiently concerning to warrant heightened attention and public warnings.

One victim was identified as Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, 38, who disappeared while out for a run. Her body was found several days later.

Investigation Intensifies
Police have increased their presence in affected areas and advised women near Kempton Park to take extra precautions, including avoiding isolated areas and going out in groups where possible.

Authorities have also offered a 400,000 South African rand reward for information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrator or perpetrators.

The discovery of the ninth body has increased pressure on investigators to determine whether the deaths form part of a single pattern or represent separate criminal cases.

No Serial Killer Confirmed
Despite growing fears among residents, authorities have not officially identified a serial killer in connection with the deaths.

Investigators continue to examine forensic evidence and the circumstances surrounding each case before determining whether there is a link.

The investigation remains ongoing.
