Air Force Veteran Dies in Horrific Rappelling Accident Before Texas Football Game

A U.S. Air Force veteran with 15 years of service has died following a devastating rappelling accident during a pregame ceremony at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson was participating in a military demonstration on October 17, 2026, when he fell from the stadium’s overhead structure in front of thousands of spectators.

The Air Force subsequently confirmed his identity and announced an investigation into the fatal incident.

A Pregame Demonstration Turns Into Tragedy

The accident occurred shortly before a college football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Navy.

Four military personnel were scheduled to participate in a rappelling demonstration as part of the stadium’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans event.

Witnesses reported seeing Patterson descend rapidly from the overhead structure before striking the field.

The Alamodome’s rafters stand approximately 170 feet above the stadium floor.

Emergency Responders Rush to Save Airman

Medical personnel immediately rushed onto the field and began treating Patterson as spectators watched the emergency unfold.

He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Despite emergency medical efforts, Patterson was later pronounced dead.

Footage recorded by spectators circulated online, showing the frightening moments surrounding the accident.

Air Force Identifies Fallen Service Member

On October 18, military officials identified the deceased airman as Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a Tactical Air Control Party instructor assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, at Joint Base San Antonio.

Originally from Fort Stewart, Georgia, Patterson had served in the Air Force for 15 years and received numerous military decorations.

He was also recognized as the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year in 2022.

Brig. Gen. Scott C. Mills, commander of the 57th Wing, expressed condolences and acknowledged the profound impact of Patterson’s death on his family, colleagues and fellow service members.

Football Game Continues Following Brief Delay

Following the accident, officials delayed the beginning of the football game while emergency responders attended to Patterson.

The decision to proceed with the event subsequently attracted public criticism.

The American Conference explained that officials had consulted representatives from both universities, stadium management and local authorities before allowing the game to continue.

At that time, Patterson’s death had not yet been publicly confirmed, and officials cited respect for his family’s privacy and military notification procedures.

Investigation Into Fatal Fall Continues

The U.S. Air Force has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Officials have not established a definitive cause of the fall, and details regarding the equipment and safety procedures involved have not been publicly released.

Patterson’s death has left his military community mourning a decorated instructor whose career spanned more than a decade of service.
