Baby Born With Rare Condition That Split His Face Into Two Halves Faces Life-Changing Surgery

When Brandy Shain welcomed her little boy Brody, she knew his journey would be unlike that of most newborns.

Born in Rockwall, Texas, Brody had an exceptionally rare congenital condition that caused a severe separation along the middle of his face.

His diagnosis meant that everyday activities, including feeding and breathing, would require extraordinary medical support.

A Rare Condition Affecting His Entire Face

Brody was born with a severe midline facial cleft, accompanied by a cleft palate and an encephalocele.

An encephalocele occurs when brain tissue and its surrounding membranes protrude through an opening in the skull.

In Brody’s case, the encephalocele extended into his mouth, creating additional complications for feeding and breathing.

He required a feeding tube and supplemental oxygen to support his daily needs.

A Mother Determined to Help Her Son

As Brody’s medical needs became increasingly demanding, his mother Brandy made the difficult decision to leave her job and dedicate herself to caring for him.

His family searched for specialists capable of addressing the complex combination of craniofacial abnormalities.

They eventually connected with pediatric plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Fearon, who developed a surgical treatment plan.

A Life-Changing Surgical Journey

Brody’s treatment would require multiple operations rather than a single procedure.

The first planned surgery focused on repairing the encephalocele. A subsequent operation would bring the separated sides of his face closer together.

Additional procedures could help reconstruct his nose and upper lip as he continued growing.

The treatment offered hope that Brody could eventually breathe and eat more comfortably.

A Family Facing Emotional and Financial Challenges

Alongside the medical uncertainty, Brody’s parents faced substantial treatment-related expenses.

The family established a fundraising campaign to help cover costs, including an estimated $15,000 in out-of-pocket expenses associated with the initial surgical treatment.

Despite the challenges, his medical team expressed optimism about his prognosis.

More Than His Diagnosis

For Brody’s family, the goal has always been to give their little boy the opportunity to grow, develop and experience childhood as comfortably as possible.

His story highlights both the complexity of rare craniofacial conditions and the importance of specialized pediatric surgical care.

Although his treatment journey involves multiple procedures, Brody remains surrounded by a family determined to support him through every milestone.
