Bodycam Footage Reveals Tense Arrest of Florida Woman Accused of Shooting Her Terminally Ill Husband

A disturbing scene unfolded inside a Florida hospital when police officers confronted a 76-year-old woman accused of shooting her husband of more than 50 years as he lay in a hospital bed.

The woman, Ellen Gilland, was arrested on January 21, 2023, at AdventHealth Daytona Beach after her 77-year-old husband, Jerry Gilland, was fatally shot.

Body camera footage captured officers repeatedly ordering Ellen to drop her gun as they tried to persuade her to surrender. According to police, the situation developed into a tense standoff that lasted approximately four hours.

Investigators said the couple had allegedly discussed a plan weeks earlier because of Jerry’s declining health. Police believed the incident was intended to be a murder-suicide, but Ellen did not take her own life.

The shooting also forced hospital staff and other patients to deal with an emergency response, while officers worked to bring the situation under control.

Ellen initially faced a first-degree murder charge. However, a grand jury later indicted her on different charges, including assisting self-murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault.

The case raised difficult questions about end-of-life suffering, personal choices and the emotional strain faced by families dealing with terminal illness.
