BORN WITH A RARE BRAIN MALFORMATION, BABY JAXON WAS GIVEN LITTLE HOPE OF SURVIVAL — BUT HIS FAMILY GOT FIVE PRECIOUS YEARS WITH HIM
When Brittany and Brandon Buell learned that their unborn baby had a severe brain abnormality, they faced a future filled with uncertainty.
Their son, Jaxon Emmett Buell, was born in Orlando, Florida, on August 27, 2014, with an exceptionally rare condition called microhydranencephaly.
The disorder had severely affected the development of his brain and skull, leaving his head visibly different from that of other newborns.
Doctors gave his family a grave prognosis. Yet Jaxon survived his first days, then his first weeks, and eventually celebrated birthdays his parents had once feared they might never see.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
During Brittany’s pregnancy, medical examinations revealed serious abnormalities in her baby’s development.
Jaxon was born with approximately 80 percent of his brain missing, according to accounts shared by his family and reported by news organisations.
His condition required intensive medical attention from the beginning. He spent his first weeks in neonatal intensive care while doctors monitored his fragile health.
His parents knew that his future would be medically complex, but they wanted to spend whatever time they could with their little boy.
The Little Boy Behind Jaxon Strong
As Jaxon grew, his parents began documenting his daily life through photographs and social media updates under the name Jaxon Strong.
Although he experienced profound developmental limitations and could not walk or speak in the usual way, his family shared the ways he responded to the world around him.
They celebrated his smiles, his bright blue eyes and the moments when he appeared to recognise familiar faces.
His story gradually reached hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom followed his progress and sent messages of support.

Every Birthday Became a Precious Milestone
Jaxon’s family faced ongoing medical challenges, including seizures and the need for specialised care.
But his life also included family outings, celebrations and the affection of those closest to him.
His parents shared photographs of ordinary childhood experiences, including meeting Santa Claus and spending time with loved ones.
For a family that had received such a difficult prognosis before his birth, every additional year together carried special meaning.
His Final Days Surrounded by Family
In March 2020, Jaxon’s health deteriorated, and he entered hospice care.
On April 1, 2020, he died at the age of five from complications associated with his condition.
His father, Brandon, confirmed that Jaxon passed away peacefully while being held in his arms, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
Brandon also clarified that his son’s death was unrelated to COVID-19.
Five Years His Family Will Never Forget
News of Jaxon’s death prompted tributes from people who had followed his journey since infancy.
For his parents, however, the photographs and public attention were only a small part of his story.
Jaxon was their son — a little boy whose life involved significant medical difficulties but also countless moments of tenderness, connection and love.
His family had once been warned that their time with him might be measured in days.
Instead, they shared five years together.
